Resveratrol is a phytoalexin produced naturally by several different plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. Resveratrol has also been produced by chemical synthesis and is sold as a nutritional supplement because of its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects. Extremely high doses of resveratrol in a special proprietary formulation were necessary for significantly lowering blood sugar.

Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a consituent of red wine, yet the amount in red wine is not in sufficient enough amounts to explain the "French paradox"( the observation that the French suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease even though they have a diet rich in saturated fats)

Life extension is a huge benefit of Resveratrol. Dr. David Sinclair and Dr. Howitz reported in 2003 in the journal Nature, that resveratrol significantly extends the lifespan of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae..Later studies conducted by Sinclair also showed that resveratrol prolongs the lifespan of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.
