When you have made the decision to work at home, or when you realize that your part-time home business has grown beyond the kitchen table, planning your home office is a very important first step.  First consider that if you establish your office in an area where you conduct only business - no personal business or personal computer time - you can deduct the use of that space and equipment on your tax return.

Next consider establishing a separate business address, such as a post office box.  Not only will this help keep your business mail distinct from your personal mail, it will lend a professional look and feel to your correspondence.

Pick an area in your house where distractions will be limited, and your things will not be disturbed when your are away from your desk.  A corner of the bedroom will work, as long as your family knows that space is not to be disturbed.  If your lucky enough to have a separate room for your office, use the door to limit interruptions.

Lots of daylight makes an office a much more pleasant and productive place to work.  If you have a shortage of windows, buy natural spectrum light bulbs and try to light up the whole space, rather than using task lighting, which can tire your eyes.  Ventilate your office as well as possible to keep you fresh and alert.

Think about what fits your work style and design your office around your needs.  You will likely be using a computer extensively, and a task chair is the best choice for working at the computer, but if you are at your most creative relaxing in a leisurely executive's chair, get one!  A high-quality chair is a must, whichever style you prefer.  If your work is almost entirely on your computer, you won't need a roomy desk, but if you are at your best with a large, open space to spread out your papers, be sure your deks or wokr space is big enough for you.

Decide how much filings space you need, now and in the future.  Whether you can get by with the one filing draw that comes with your desk, or you need a separate two or four draw filing cabinet, use it to its full potential, and don't let papers pile up on your work space.  Even your pile of "to do" projects can be kept in a file when you're working on something else.  Another great organizational and space-saving tool is a bulletin board or white board - the bigger the better- to keep your notes, calendar or other reference material off your work space.

If space is an issue, consolidate your equipment as much as possible.  A printer that also copies, faxes and scans is a great idea.  Or, find out how to accomplish those functions with your computer or internet.

Putting some thought into creating your work space will make things much easier when your business gets busy!  By implementing some of these principles, it will help to expedite you on your journey at developing your leadership skills.
