Shoes for Politicians

Muntadar al-Zaidi attacked President George W Bush at a Baghdad news conference on 15 December 2008 by a SIZE 10 SHOE. The Arabs are boiling with anger against Bush so they never want to miss a chance of insulting Him. They have even thrown shoes on Bush’s posters.

Then on 7 April 2009 Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram met the same fate. Jarnail Singh, a journalist from the Hindi daily Dainik Jagran flung his shoe on Chidambaram. Though the Minister was not hurt or maybe Jarnail Singh didn’t want to hit him exactly.

Such is the anguish of people of Kanpur Dehat (Village), India that scores of villagers are attending a practice session of ‘shoethrowing’ at the playground of a basic primary school in the nondescript Rurwa village of Sarwankhera these days.

My concern is will throwing shoes on Politicians help. Can we come up with better and innovative methods for punishing them. Ofcourse, these politicians are responsible to the public. There must be some exam which a person should qualify before contesting in elections. When you need to qualify to become a doctor or an engineer or an IAS, then why not for such an important post?

Its an irony of Indian Democracy that a person in jail can contest for elections but can’t vote from jail.

Actions speak louder than words...

I guess in all the instances where someone expressed their views by throwing shoes, took the phrase in literal sense :)

One big (dis) advantage of such a thing is, it gives tons of coverage at Zero cost...
