Network Marketing is a fascinating industry - At one end of the spectrum, we have multi-million dollar leaders who have built huge organisations and maintained them over decades, earning millions upon millions in passive income.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are the hitters who able "sell" to masses of people, but can't keep anybody. They tell you that there's no such thing as residual income in MLM anymore, just piddly downline checks, and there's a way better "get paid today" deal.

Quite a striking difference, but why so? How can these two types of people who have the same opportunity have vastly different results?

I mean, the concept is simple enough: you buy your company's products at wholesale and retail it directly to customers, and sponsor other reps to do exactly the same...

So with the common denominator being the opportunity build and succeed at one's own enterprise, the difference maker has to be the person conducting the business.

The company is not a big factor in a prospect's decision to join or not. The products are not a big factor in a prospect's decision. The compensation plan isn't really a big factor either.

Time and again, it has been proven that You are the biggest influence in a prospect's decision.

There are only 3 reasons why they would join You in business. People will only join You in business because they...

  1. Know You
  2. Like You and...
  3. Trust You

People will only join people who they know, like and trust. It's the only way to both sponsor AND keep people.

This principle works both online and offline.

What this law implies is you MUST develop a good relationship, a genuine person to person relationship with your prospect BEFORE they join you in business.

That's why pitching a business opportunity doesn't work. Making exaggerated claims to entice people doesn't work. And sponsoring people "automatically" without ever picking up the phone is a load of bullsh*t!

Know, like and trust is a fundamental principle of network marketing. Therefore, the traditional way of building a business locally through word of mouth, and face to face contact will always work, and will always be relevant, if it's done properly.

With network marketing being so prominent on the internet now, "internet marketers" (not network marketers) will tell you that the old school ways of network marketing are dead, and how you can sponsor people without ever talking to them.

That might well be possible, but don't expect to retain many of the people you recruit.

There is a distinct difference between direct marketing, and network marketing.

Direct marketing is a numbers game. It's about building lists and testing headlines and offers to get the best conversion rate. It's all about getting the best bang for your marketing dollar. There's nothing wrong with that - it's just not network marketing.

Network marketing is not a numbers game. Network marketing is all about building relationships. According to MLM legend Ken Dunn,"a network marketing millionaire is someone who has a million friends".

I'm a big advocate of using the internet for MLM. As a timid, shy person, it's the best way I can get myself in front of the right people.

But I think Randy Gage has hit the nail on the head. On an interview with Eric Worre at NetworkMarketingPro.com, he says the internet is a place where we can expand our warm market.

To build a network marketing business, you have to like people. Not everybody likes people, and that's why network marketing is not for everybody.
