A Word About Sales
1. Shopping isn't buying. It's simply looking at stuff, comparing and thinking about
what it would be like to own something. Women can shop all day and buy nothing. :)
2. A person can't buy anything unless it was sold to them. Even if they just pick something
up off a shelf and head to the cashier, the store has sold them what they bought. To sell is
to offer something for sale, and then accept money in exchange for the item bought.
3. What you mean when you say that people don't like to be sold, is they don't like to be
conned into buying something they don't really want or need.
THAT IS NOT WHAT PROFESSIONAL SALESPEOPLE DO.
A salesperson is a trusted adviser in an area that the customer doesn't have as much
information about. The professional salesperson seeks to help a customer better their lives
through the use of their product or service. For helping the customer GET WHAT THEY WANT,
the salesperson is paid.
By the way, that's what Zig Ziglar meant in his famous quote. He meant helping people get
what they want BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE HE SOLD TO THEM.
The product or service he SOLD to them is what was helping them get what they wanted.
Zig Ziglar may have said some motivational things, but he was first and foremost a
SALESMAN, and he was proud of that fact.
4. The only reason that most people don't like salespeople is because most have never come
into contact with a professional salesperson. Until we begin to teach our teams how
professional salespeople conduct themselves, this trend will continue.
If you've ever walked into a place, not sure of what you needed, but knowing what you wanted
to accomplish, and someone listened to you explain what your objective was, and then
showed you something that would help you achieve your goal, and you left satisfied with
your purchase, got home, and it did exactly what you wanted done, you've met a
professional salesperson.
5. Regardless of what feelings they harbor about salespeople, it's our job to be professional and
deal with people the way we should. If you are a professional salesperson, the customer
won't have those feelings about you and will probably think you're lousy at sales. But that's
only because they don't understand anything about selling. They think the con man and the
swindler are salespeople. They are not.
6. This point is incredibly important.
IF YOU TELL A PROSPECT THAT NETWORK MARKETING IS NOT SALES, AND THEY WON'T EVER HAVE
TO SELL ANYTHING, YOU ARE LYING.
One reason so many people are against network marketing is because they know they're being
lied to. It's not sales? Really? Ok, I'm in!
Wait a minute.
If this isn't sales, then why is my commission based on SALES VOLUME?
You can't escape the fact that network marketing is a SALES BUSINESS.
If you bring someone into your business on the premise that they're not joining a
SALES TEAM, they will feel lied to and cheated when they realize that it was all BS.
You will have created in them the feeling that you're talking about when you say
"people don't like to be sold". As in, "sold a bill of goods".
They'll accurately see it as the ol' bait and switch.
And they'll quit.
6. There is no way on Earth that you will ever "get someone to buy" unless you "sell"
to them. The very act of buying can't exist without something being sold. If you honestly
believe that you can not only survive, but thrive in a sales business without selling I
have only one thing to say to you.
Good luck at your next job.
