Prospecting V's Marketing
So maybe you have just started or about to start a brand new business and you are feeling a little overloaded with information and wondering the best way to grow your business.
Or maybe you have been in business awhile and what you have been doing has not worked well and you are looking for a better and more effective way of growing your business.
There are basically two main ways of growing your business through prospecting or through marketing. So what are the differences?
When you prospect you are calling someone on the phone or you are talking to an individual directly. So you might be calling opportunity leads and inviting them to a presentation. So this is where you can expect to hear a no or a yes directly. This is where you can expect a lot of rejection. It takes a great deal of time and effort and a lot of discipline. It does work but in the end is probably the hardest path to success.
This was the main way I did business and let me tell you it is very hard work indeed with a lot of rejection and is very hard to get your team to do the same, which makes retention difficult. It can be very expensive if you are buying leads and you can only go so far with this method before you end up just treading water or worse finding that your team melts away.
Because in the end people are looking for true successful leaders. So it is vital that you grow into a leadership position quickly, especially if you want your business to keep growing. Prospecting in some ways it is a lot less skilled than professionally marketing.
Marketing on the other hand is about branding your business and branding yourself. So the methods may appear at first to be more general in nature and even have the appearance of being a lot less direct! So you set out to position yourself as a leader and expert in your field so that you can attract people to you and your business.
So for example you teach and present content of value for the listener on a webinar or a video or some such presentation medium. You could publish an article and give the reader a real solution to a common problem. The education can be about your business or a topic that will show that you are knowledgeable about the subject, thus branding yourself as an expert and leader.
You can then expect people to approach you for more information and eventually you can expect them to join your business. People will naturally seek you out if you are seen as the expert and leader they are looking for. They see that you can solve their problem whatever it is and that is what we call attraction marketing!
They can clearly see that if they follow you they will be successful. At the end of the day what people are looking for is to own a successful business that pays them at or above what they are looking for!
So for the person who is new it is very important that you read a lot of personal development material, a lot of educational articles on all aspects of owning a business and follow someone who can clearly show you the way who has been successful and already achieved what you would like to achieve.
So maybe you are just starting out or you have not succeeded yet in any business online…my advice would be to diligently search for a leader you would want to follow and you know deep down believes in you and committed to your success. Concentrate and focus on that first, finding a coach and mentor that will be able to help you achieve success in whatever business that is! You definitely need to prove to any such leader that you are deeply committed to success and that you are a very willing student, ready to do ALL that the leader teaches and says…no matter how hard it is!
