Telling The Truth About MLM Failure...The Entrepreneurial Transition
I got a phone call yesterday from a young lady who identified herself as a correspondent from CNBC.
It was kinda weird...I had just had a conversation with a new distributor who had chosen my primary company because of a report on CNBC last year...
Anyway...this was a "pre-interview" to see if I had the chops to do a live interview on camera about my experiences with my company and network marketing in general.
She asked a lot of questions about whether or not we're making any money (we are) and whether or not we feel we get enough support from the company (we do).
She then eased into what I think was the real agenda of her call...the high failure rate in MLM.
She asked "Why do you think there is a 90% failure rate in your business?"
I told her that I thought the actual rate was closer to 97%, and that it wasn't unique to my business, but pretty consistent in the industry in general.
I know these reporter-types like sound bites so I boiled it down to what I have always believed about the number of people who quit (not fail...) this business:
People have difficulty making the shift from a wage earner to an entrepreneur. They go from a world where they clock in and try to look busy for 8 hours to a world where they have to produce and there's no place to hide if they don't.
This week my personal development loop has been a call recorded with Jordan Shultz and Adam Chandler interviewing Ray Higdon.
None of these guys are in my company, but their advice and coaching applies as much to my company and business as it does yours:
Get out and get busy. You can't sit around and wait for it to come to you and if what you are doing isn't producing then change what you are doing.
I was surprised to hear Ray say he was knocking out $30K months before he ever 'generated a lead' online.
That might cause you to think about your daily activity...
If you are not thinking in terms of being productive versus being busy then you have not made the entrepreneurial transition...you are still thinking like a wage earner...
So...keep your eyes peeled...you may see me on the news someday...
