In my 31 years of network marketing, I've never seen a better company than Yoli, that's why I came out of retirement to build another huge business. Fill in the form below for a FREE bottle of Alkalete!
The Vulcan Mind Meld
Growing up, one of my favorite shows was the original Star Trek and my favorite character was Spock. He was logical and unemotional . . . like me (at the time). I loved it when he would place his hands on a person’s head and do the Vulcan mind meld. It was a combining of thoughts, experiences, knowledge, and memories. It was also a melding of two different cultures.
As I have been contemplating all of the articles posted on Betternetworker. I find many articles that are what I would call "old school" and many that are "new school." However, after over 30 years in this industry and many years of success I've come to the conclustion that I in order for us to be successful in network marketing we can’t be either old or new school, but a melding of both.
Back in 1979, when I joined the network marketing industry, we didn’t have computers, the internet, web sites, autoresponders, web conferences, e-mail, instant messaging, VOIP telephone, voice mail, cell phones, PDA’s, DVD’s, CD’s, or teleconferences. All we had was a pad, pen, and our personality. We met face-to-face, belly-to-belly and drew circles. We showed the plan, showed the plan, and showed the plan. It was a different culture than what we see today and yet it worked and continues to work even today. I know of a company that did $1.5 billion in it's first four years of business, with people making high seven figure incomes and all they do is home parties; now that's old school.
In 1995 I started with a new company and decided to build on the internet. We developed a team image web site, offered a free book for those who were interested and would provide us with their contact information. We created the tag-team system of e-mailing, where a new prospect would receive 3 to 5 e-mails from our group, showing them a real team approach. We conducted weekly opportunity teleconferences for our network to use and did training conferences for our downline at least once a month. This was truly a “new school” business and it worked. We built a large international network that is still in place today and even though I’ve been semi-retired since 2001, it still generates a full-time residual income.
I learned a valuable lesson in that “new school” business – technology is great for sifting and sorting, but people still want to know that there is a live body behind all the technology. At first we were striving to build a completely self-contained system that would take a prospect from start to finish without human involvement. Although we built the system, it didn’t work.
We found the answer in John Naisbitt’s best seller, Megatrends. Although the book was published in 1988,
it had great prophetic insight into the 21st century. Naisbitt spoke of the need for high touch with the high tech. Ah, the melding of two cultures. The old school mixed with the new school. As we began to apply this principle to our high tech system, it worked. We used the technology to sift through the lookers and find those who were serious. We engaged them in e-mail conversation and as trust was built, they would agree to a phone conversation. Once we reached that point, our average close ratio was over 75%. True high tech and high touch . . . new school and old school working together.
I love all the technology we have available to us in network marketing today. It makes building a business so much easier. However, I never want to forget that we are dealing with people and people need high touch. They want to hear our voice or see our face. They still like the personal interaction. The old school and new school must meld together into something better. Something more productive. Something that really works.

Good one
Hey Rod,
You've combined two of my favourite (I'm obviously not from the U.S.) topics very well. Star Trek and the Network Marketing.
It's good to see more people sharing about the "melding" of old & new schools.
When it gets down to it, it's all about what suits people and what skills they want to master next. As it is a journey and distributors can fail with either or both schools.
The key being to clarify for ourselves that success in network marketing/mlm is not only possible for us but that we want to create that above all else and commit to mastering the skills needed to do it in whatever order makes sense to us.
Best

The old way of doing MLM is dead!
Don't you love the idiots that make this statement on the Internet? Woops...no offence indented to anyone. But, the statement is just plain ignorant. Show me a person that makes a statement like that and I'll show you a person that does not have a "real" success in a "true" MLM model or a significant residual income. I have never seen anyone with a "legacy" MLM income in a fancy, reputable company with a real product who has built it only on the Internet.
Here's is proof, look at the top 10 MLM companies in the last 10 years. Yes, they have web sites and lead generation systems, but they are driven by seminars, functions, company culture, personal relationships, AND 87% of the recruiting happens at the grass-root level face to face, not on the web.
Look at the companies that grew the fastest in 2008 and 2009 (I don't want to mention names here, but they are easy to search) those companies DO NOT have an Internet culture. SEO, copywriting, PPC, articles…are you kidding?
Now, I love the Internet, I have recruited over 400,000 people online in the last 8 years, I think the Internet is a valuable tool for lead generation, follow-up, farming and training, but alone will not build a legacy, long-term $50,000 a month residual income in MLM.
Another proof, I know at least 25 people that reached the $50,000 a month mark in the last 18 month and many more who have reached the $25,000/mo mark. None of them built it on the Internet and do not even have a lead generation system. I know at least 5 people who are making over $250,000 a month and they have ZERO Internet component. I could write a book about old school/new school MLM and maybe one day I will.
For now, Rod, thank you touching on this subject, and to all the MLM newbies with Internet dreams, new school talk, armed only with fancy sales letters, SEO stuff and “opinions” here is my best advice: Work at become a real leader not a push-button merchant and listen to the people that have a check to show, not those who don’t!
Vulcan Mind Meld
Hi Rod. Good article. And yes I too loved Mr. Spock, especially for his unassailable logic. And thank you too for mentioning "Megatrends" by John Naisbitt. I will check out this book and will forward the information to my coach.
Old Meets New
This is a great article. I've heard too many times that "old school is dead" but many still use it successfully. I don't know if it's arrogance or just people who failed at old school but it's certainly not dead. I was in MLM in the 70s but got out until recently. It's good to hear a perspective from someone who's been in it the whole time and transitioned successfully through.
Oh yes, I watched the original Star Treks too.
Star Trek rocks!
'Nuff said!
The School Of Network Marketing
Old school... New school... the fact is, it's all a learning process. Lets face it... both "SCHOOLS" work! Discover which one fits your personality. Thanks for a great article, Rod!
