WARNING: Be Careful What You Believe ...

This is a warning to those of you who may be new to network marketing, referral marketing, direct sales, internet marketing, affiliate marketing or any other kind of business model that may have brought you here.

This community is ripe with a plethora of amazing information on these industries and more.
How to be a better marketer. How to be a better leader. How to be a better person.
In short ... How to Be a Better Networker.

Amazing contributors and instructors abound, whom constantly provide high quality useful information that has been proven in the trenches and on the street.

Yet, with the good that abounds within the archives of the forum and learning area, there lurks an often undetected foe. One which preys upon newcomers in particular ...

MisInformation

You'll find a great many topics discussed within the forum conversations and posted articles.
The danger is that it can sometimes be nothing more than theory, opinion or sheer ignorance...
Untested. Untried. Untrue.

Yet zealously preached as FACT. A simple regurgitation of something someone heard about a thing from someone else.

I don't think people here are being malicious or purposely spreading misinformation.
They are simply ill informed themselves.

My point is simple ... Be Careful What You Read and Believe.
Study to your hearts content. Build up your own personal value so that you may become a better networker and a better leader, one which people will look upon someday for advice. But go the extra step and validate the information you are consuming. Ask questions. Engage with the authors. Look for others that have had experience with what ever it is you are reading and ask them questions.

As you find marketing strategies or personal growth strategies, etc. that you feel connected with, then I highly recommend that you implement them and create your own proof and experiences.

Don't fall into the role of being a "dj" ... simply spinning the message of someone else you heard because it sounds good. Test it before you spin it! Remember - It's YOUR reputation on the line as well the success of those you are delivering it to.

In this way you will then be in the position of becoming a valued contributor to this awesome community as well and help those who are now in the position you were in as a beginner looking for trusted direction and guidance as they make the journey we all begin.

I know it's slightly early but I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year...

Live Long and Prosper.
~ Richard

Examples?

Hey Richard, Thanks for the heads up. It seems like this subject seems to be really bothering you lately. Maybe you can give us an example of what's (falsely) being zealously preached as fact?

Derek Alvarez — Mon, 12/21/2009 - 9:13pm

No Disrespect ...

Hey Derek,

To be perfectly honest my intentions with the article were to bring awareness and hopefully instill just enough caution to those reading it that they will move forward and do their due diligence. If I can do that then mission accomplished.

What I do not want to do is turn it into a public flogging by calling anyone out. It's out there and if you look you'll see it. If you don't then that should be all the more reason to dig deeper in what it is someone is sharing.

Don't worry though ... my comments weren't directed at any of the instructors here or anything like that. And actually goes beyond the scope of just the BN community. This should be a principle, in my mind at least, that everyone adopt in all aspects of their life.

"In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king!"

Richard Bravo — Tue, 12/22/2009 - 12:22am

Good call, Richard

I don't want to see any floggings, either! I was just wondering if you had an example of a specific method being preached. But I suppose that could start something ugly, as well.

Have a great Christmas!

Sincerely,
Derek

The Jesus Model ...

That's cool Derek, glad you found some inspiration in the article.
Here's an article I posted back in September on a similar topic to yours:

Your Business and the The Jesus Model…

Inspiration

Yes, I agreed with most of your post (especially that people should actually practice what they preach).

But I did find some inspiration in a minute point that I admittedly took out of context, which is how you seem to be against newbies "regurgitating" what they've learned.

There is a problem if they don't actually DO what they say, which is probably what you were actually saying.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration and for the excellent article on The Jesus Model.

So true!

Thanks Richard! There are things that come around on the internet that are so far wrong, and so untrue! So watching what you do on the internet is so true! great Post!

A 'Newbies' Nightmare...

Great stuff Richard, thanks.

Your points are so true. You know what they say about opinions...'Everyone's got one'.

As an up-and-comer, I've certainly seen my fair share of 'theory, opinion and sheer ignorance' shoveled around. Seems like their are an awful lot of experts here, from every back-ground imaginable.

I can appreciate all the information being moved around here and I really value this platform as a source of wisdom. As you pointed out, it is my responsibility to process what I take in and filter it as needed.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to you.

Awesome post - Thanks!

Richard - great post. I'm learning to filter what information I need to make me a Better Networker. Happy Holidays to you too.

Be careful ...

Thanks Richard for a down to earth post that is full of wisdom and good old fashioned common sense. I firmly believe that we all can at times fall guilty of the practice of extolling someone's or something's virtue because it simply resonates with us at that time. Often if we were to revisit our comments, posts etc a few months down the track, we may very well question the sanity in promoting the idea in the first place. But then again, that is only my opinion and perhaps I shud go and research myself before I make another post (hehe). Have an awesome CHRISTmas everyone!

Clarification? ...

Hey Derek, it's not that I am "against newbies "regurgitating" what they've learned" ... Is that what I said? It's not what I meant to convey.

My point is to convey the importance of validating information we consume prior to implementing it as a core component of our "operating system" (reference: Be Careful What You Believe Part 2) The "regurgitating" comment is a reference to hearing something and "teaching" it without any real tangible experience of your own simply because it sounded good. Without your own "testing" of what it is you heard how would you know it is accurate? Just because so and so said so?

Of course there are "trusted" sources of information and education, and part of the popular learning and growing speak is "DO - BE - HAVE," but even then people should at least be aware or better yet AWAKE enough to also think for themselves.

I've been a participant in several conversations by people who would be labeled "reliable" and found inaccurate information being shared OR I personally knew of a more effective or efficient method, process or strategy for accomplishing what it is they were teaching. It's not my meeting, so what do you do? But people participating will walk away and BELIEVE that's how it is.

The same goes with the forums, etc. People will "HEAR - BELIEVE - SHARE" without any tangible validation. Does that make them a bad person? Does that make the teacher a scammer? No Way!

Again, my point was learn & share, but "create your own experience" and teach that.

Anyway ... maybe another article or post is order to provide more clarification.

Great Post

I believe all newcomers should read this post. I've had a couple of people drop out of my business because of being misinformed about the company.

Thank You for the Info.

Yes Sir

I agree wholeheartedly. I have been researching home business opportunities for years, and I have fallen prey to a lot of false information. Now I am very wary of what I read and study. I have learned to dive deeper into it and check it out thoroughly to make sure it is accurate. I am also very careful of what info and advise I give to other people now; I like to put it to the test before I pass it on.
