Success is Uncommon, Therefore not to be enjoyed by the Common Man. I am looking for the Uncommon People
"Success is uncommon, therefore not to be enjoyed by the Common Man...I am looking for the Uncommon People"~Coach Cal Stoll
These words are on the inside flap of Coach Tony Dungy's new book:
Uncommon: Finding Your Path To Significance
Dungy first heard these words as a freshman on Stoll's football team almost three decades ago, and they have stayed with him ever since. The only difference is that it is now Dungy summoning men to an uncommon life of significance.
For those who are weary of self-help books, have no fear. Dungy's focus is on service to God, family, and fellow man. There are no get-rich quick schemes in this book, or promises of blessings. This is just Tony Dungy trying to instruct men how to be better husbands, fathers, and human beings. He doesn't claim to have all the answers; he's just willing to share what he's been through.
He then notes how uncommon true success and significance are, outlines many of the reasons, and prescribes practical pathways: attitudes, ambitions, and allegiances.
Though focused somewhat on young males, Uncommon is for every person pursuing a life of meaning, a path of purpose, and the road toward significance.
It is divided into seven parts, each dealing with important issues that men deal with in their lives, such as family, friends, career, and relationship with Christ.
Tony Dungy believes that his primary job as a coach is to build men worthy of being role models to a nation of boys who look up to them: Men of character, integrity, and courage. Men with both confidence and humility. Men who know the value of family and faith as well as career. And his message to them about how to attain real significance in life is one that many people—not just football players—are desperate to hear.
What does the title of this article mean to you?
These days, there is so much significance placed on "everyone being equal." It starts at the elementary age in school. The "No Child Left Behind" rules in school have not worked. The "everybody gets a trophy" on sports teams is not helping to show people that you really don't need to work that hard...you will get a trophy no matter what. That doesn't work either...what does that teach kids.
The message here is that those who are uncommon, those who have the courage to go above and beyond the easy path, those who are willing to push themselves, those who are willing to work hard and achieve greatness are the "uncommon" people that the coach was referring to.
This is what I want with those who join my team: to be "uncommon." People who are going to work hard for what they get, stand out in the crowd and not expect everything to be handed to them. I expect no less of myself and hope that those who want to join me have the same mindset.

Hey Dianne: Excellent,
Hey Dianne:
Excellent, excellent piece!
UNCOMMON is indeed what separates those with "purpose" in this life.
SUCCESS is elusive for many (most) - in fact, I just posted about this on the BN Forum:

Thank you for this powerful message.
Here's to much continued success and happiness.
Sincerely / Peter A.
To the Degree We Surrender
Yes, the Infinite Intelligence grants us an uncommon life to the degree we surrender our common one.
These are the people who life passion filled lives. These are the people who continue to grow, move outside their comfort zones and will never settle for a mediocre existence. These are people who are handed the map, a hand on the shoulder, a whisper in the ear, YOU CAN.... but they must make the effort to unfold it and make their way at their own pace. I appreciate your wonderful article today.

Point On!
Accepting the challange to be uncommon, to strive for excellence, is what has been responsible for giving us some of the greatest discoveries throughout civilization.
It has inspired the greatest inventors, the greatest inventions, the greatest companies, the greatest products, the greatest athletes. Without the desire to be more, we slowly parish. The flames of desire are dampened.
Some of the greatest discoveries are yet to happen. Shame on a society that encourages mediocrity as the bar of achievement!
