The Importance of a mentor

When I was a young guy just getting started I was fortunate to fall in with a very special business owner. He taught me the greatest lesson. He taught me how to get things done. He gave me the confidence to make decisions and act on them. He always told me the truth even if it was not complementary.

He told me if I wanted to build businesses that it was important to find people that demonstrated leadership abilities cultivate them and they will build your business. He convinced me to always think positively about myself.

I am dyslectic (sever) and as a result I was unable to get an education in the public school system. By all rights I should not be here communicating with you in the written word. I had very little to offer the world but enthusiasm to learn and a high level of intelligence.

Then I met my mentor, teacher and friend (I was 20) who saved my life. He gave me the confidence and guidance that allowed me grow beyond my condition. He trusted me; he gave responsibilities and instilled in me the need to satisfy them.

I have experienced many successes as a result of the foundation he gave me. He remained an advisor and friend until he died.

He also told me to teach any that are worthy…without agenda , as he had me. Become a leader of leaders. Every one that you help become successful will in turn help create your success. I have since coached many on a successful journey.

This is why I am proud to be a practitioner of Mentoring For Free. In this way I can repay and pass along his wisdom. The training plans are all generic.

Wow, Elwood!

I am also dyslexic and should not be able to communicate through writing. It was a teacher who taught me, by her example of caring and persistence, the value of just one person of authority who believes in you.

I became a teacher myself largely because I wanted to live the values that teacher embodied to me. And I am a mentor and coach now for the same reason.

I love reading your posts, and am grateful for the mentor you met at age 20. May he be blessed, and his children's children to the seventh generation! He gave us you.

the importance of a mentor

Elwood,

Thank you for your humble heart and showing us the real side of you.

"He taught me how to get things done."  I love that statement.  It rings so true with me because most often I realize I am scattered in so many areas that I don't accomplish what I should.

I am also blessed by how you overcame adversity and became successful.  What a blessing to have that someone come into your life, invest their time into you to teach you what you needed so that you would become a great leader.

God bless you, Elwood, I for one appreciate your sharing with us.

To your continued success,

Lynn

Very Heartfelt Post!

Your post is very touching and heartfelt. You are an inspiration and a valuable asset to this community. We need more mentors like yourself to continue to carry out the message that anything is possible. I wouldn't of gotten this far if it hadn't been for someone believing in me and encouraging me to reach for the stars. Thank you for all the excellent articles and blogs that you have made available to everyone. Your knowledge in this business is very well needed and appreciated. Have a blessed day, and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Katherine Hayes

I Totally Agree Elwood!

They say the fastest way to cross a mine field is to follow someone's footsteps who has crossed it before you...sounds pretty simple right. So, the EASIEST and FASTEST way to become successful is to find one or more mentors and follow their advice!

If you read books or articles about really successful men and women...politicians, business moguls, artists, athletes, coaches etc., you will find they ALL had mentors in their lives!

But, as I'm sure you would agree Elwood, people need to be humble, open minded and willing to take mentorship. Very often in Network Marketing, people sign-up and want to do things their own way. They don't like to listen to anyone...they think they can create their own "system".

Best Wishes,
Brad Marcus
