The List Killer

Well, I finally did it... I hit the unsubscribe link.

I mean call me old fashioned but I still need some literary fore play before being clobbered over the head and dragged off  to the shiny red submit button, drooling with anticipation and waving my credit card ready to commit long term.

Recently I have been an avid student of almost any e-mail campaign going, I will gladly opt in when given the chance and on a daily basis I eagerly open my mail account anticipating many clever new e-mails chalk full of great content and helpful advice. Ok, and on some occasion a quick sales pitch here a product plug there and even the ever popular bait and switch link (lol) you gotta love em for trying.

But one particular e-mail this morning was a little off... just a (RE: Hey you gotta see this) in the subject line... an otherwise slightly amusing way of getting my attention...But upon opening the mail, only a sentence or two, if that, and then the Link.

Come on... no courtesy script, no grand tales of how it’s gonna be, just wham bam and then fry my retinas with an image of the “shirtless wonder” sitting on his deck chair pretending he can read his laptop in the scorching high noon Hawaiian sun... Really?... It’s gonna be like that?  I don’t think so darlin. You might want to warm me up a little... maybe tell me how great I am and how  my eyes sparkle in the glow of the Internet, how you’ll be there in the morning and e-mail me back sometime. (lol) I digress but you get the point.

If I wanted to buy from that page, I would have the first thousand times I came across it... talk about saturation. I had to wonder how many other potential buyers like me were hitting the unsubscribe link.

Here’s a tip. If the money is in the list and you’ve been thinking about running a new campaign or entertaining thoughts of a JV or maybe just pimp-in it out like this guy, take heed, your list could flat line fast, and no amount of list resuscitation or defibrillation will revive it.__!__!__________the end.

Bravo Tony!

Great article Tony. I too am getting tired of all the hype out there. At least now I know that when you hit the unsubscribe button the internet didn't come to an end. :D

Whoops...Troy!

Sorry Troy for getting your name wrong. I guess you remind me of someone I used to know named Tony. 8)
