Timing Trends

Have you ever wondered why some people who are just average make a ton of money. Have you ever noticed that maybe it wasn't so much the talent, but the vehicle they were traveling in? Let me give you an example of what I am trying to reiterate. If you were to fly to the moon and your just as talented as the next astronaut who is also going to fly to the moon, but he is going to fly in a spaceship that was designed in 2005 and you are going to fly in one similar to the one that Neil Armstrong flew in back in 1969. Who do you think has a better chance of getting there first? Let me give you another example. If you were in real estate within the last 5 years, do you think you could've sold a bunch of houses? Absolutely, but how would you do today? You see, what I am getting at. To make money when times are tough, or if your in the wrong vehicle takes a very talented person. Why be that talented person, when you don't have to be. Are you really loyal to one industry? I know guys who are still in real estate that are going broke, simply because they think they have to stay in real estate. Let the banks go broke, but don't you go broke. I have a close friend that just lost his agency. It wasn't that he wasn't talented, but when you have 1 buyer for every 4 - 10 houses your in deep water. I don't care how talented you are, you better be exceptional in that circumstance.

So where do you turn? You turn to the trends. I recently got involved with a functional health beverage company. Not because, I am all that excited about marketing beverages. But because I know in the next decade we are going to have more and more aging baby boomers retiring, or getting close to retirement. Most of these baby boomers have lived spoiled lives compared to previous generations, have disposable income and many of them want to feel younger. So I plan on spending at least some of my time in the next decade marketing my products to these people. I'm not a baby boommer myself, I am part of the generation x crew, but I see a trend. I've sold real estate in a down market and I can tell you that if that was my only income source I would've have struggled. Why stay in an industry when times are tough, when you can just simply jump into another vehicle. If your beating your brains out to make a living, maybe it isn't you, but maybe it is just simply your vehicle. Climb into a faster spaceship and I will see you at the top.
