Tips for Twitter

Read More: Marketing  |  Social Networking

One of the hottest new hangouts to go mingle and socialize on the web, is at twitter.com.  Twitter is mini blog site where people can post a couple of lines from their computer or cell phone, to let their friends and followers know what they are up to at the moment.

So, as you can imagine, with such an influx of people all swarming in one spot, it presents a unique opportunity to get your message in front of literally, thousands of people!

But before you go and write your most enticing piece of ad copy and eye catching headlines, and start "tweeting" the masses, just as with any social networking site, there are some do's and don'ts that can help you to avoid embarrassment, and keep your reputation in good standing at twitter.

The first thing to remember is that Twitter is first and foremost, about building relationships. Avoid posting "tweets" heavy on self promotion and links to a hyped up squeeze page.  You may get by with it in the very beginning, but as your name gets out there, people will see your intentions as just another pushy marketer trying sell them something.

The second tip is choosing who you follow.  If you follow the people who have massive followings, or the "Heavy Hitters" in your industry, chances are, that these people know a little something about how to use Twitter.  If you study the manner in which they interact with the community, you can learn by example.

And probably the best piece of advice, is just be a good citizen of the community.  Be known for always providing value to others.  Be a good schmoozer!  Be interesting, and you will have a successful experience with Twitter!
