First Impressions Are Everything, Especially With Social Networking

If you know me and follow me on Twitter you've probably seen my moving profile pic like this one. I am not saying you need a picture like this, this blog is simpler than that. There are a couple critical issues that everyone should realize with your Twitter picture.

  • Never have a picture of your company: This is absolute no no. This is a sure fire way of building impersonal, one way street relationships with your followers (if you can even call them relationships). If you're on twitter to build your downline or market for a specific business then you're approaching it completely wrong in the first place. Placing your company in fornt of yourself is the old school approach to marketing and really says that your followers are nothing more than potential viewes to your blog... To be successful today you have to be personal and embrace attraction marketing concepts.
  • Have a picture of You: Duh! Yet people still don't get this. You need a picture of yourself, not of your house, not of your car or your dream job or your company logo or anything! You need yourself in the picture at least. Why? Because this is social networking people, we are here to network and no one likes networking with some mystery person.
  • Be smiling and engaging: When I say first impressions are everything I mean exactly that. When I follow someone, and they see my smiling photo for the first time - they can make up in their mind right then that 'this guy is going to be someone I want to network with', or they can essentially block me at the click of a button. Now I am not saying everyone is going to be directly judging you based on your picture, but in a way they are...

Remember, whether you know it or not - on social networking you are constantly marketing yourself. Even if you're not into any marketing systems at all, you are still marketing yourself 24/7 because of this Web 2.0 revolution. Every time you Tweet, every time you send a message, every time you log on you are telling the world who you are and what you're here to do. The world's listening, what will you say?

Twitter Faces

I couldn't agree more, Nathaniel.  I want to see faces on Twitter, not more marketing material and stock photos.  I hope more people take your advice.

Thanks,

Laura
