(+)Twitter Tip(+)Why You Shouldn't Run Off And Follow A Bunch Of New People
When it Comes to Getting Followers on Twitter
You may be tempted to go out and start following as many people as you can in an effort to get them to follow you back. Before you do this there are a two major things you should know.
- You're only allowed to initially follow around 1,850-2,000: After this, you'll need about 1,850-2,000 total followers yourself until you can follow anymore. Because of this you want to be sure you are engaging with both your new followers and those that you follow persistently. I highly suggest using Twollo to target and follow more people in a consistent manner. If you dash off and add 2,000 random followers you may initially get about %25 at most following back (probably from those using Tweetlater). Then you're stuck unable to follow more until you get most of them to follow you back.
- After you pass the 2,000 mark, the # of people you follow can only be %10 more than the # who follow you: This is a needed cap otherwise people who love to spam links can set their Twollo accounts to follow 10,000 people every day in a lazy automated effort to generate an audience to check out their spam links.
You Have To Interact With The New People You Follow
This may seem obvious but again, this is often overlooked. There are a couple things I'll share that can help keep your following right around the number of people you follow.
- Use the @ feature: This is again obvious, but I have a feeling there might be a few people here who might not see the importance of @replies. The only way you are going to be interacting with others is by @replying. Realize that when someone @replies to you, their followers (even those not following you) will see your name. @Replies are an amazing way of getting new followers.
- Tweetlater: This is an essential tool for any Twitter enthusiast. One thing you should do right away is enable an automated message to be sent out to anyone who follows you. *Warning*, do not include any links to your blog or to another social networking site. I repeat, do not include any links whatsoever, there is nothing worse than an automated message with a link. It's a way of saying, "Hi, you're nothing but a pair of eyeballs to me so come look at this..." Include something that begs to be answered and to be interacted with. An example of what I send out - If you had 10,000 followers tomorrow, what would you do to leverage that power? This always gets a response and is a great way of making a first impression.
- Be Remarkable: I don't mean be a superhero or the next nobel prize winner Tweeting the most helpful and amazing stuff in the world. Being remarkable is simply to be remarked about. Be someone who people talk about, getting people retweet your stuff is exactly what we want here. Use anything and everything to your advantage. For example, my animated Avatat gets me a lot of exposure and a lot of remarks.
- Unfollowing People: This type of maintainance is a must. Some people just won't follow you back, others you shouldn't be following in the first place. And when your list starts to get long, an easy way to find those that are following you back and those that aren't is to see if you can directly message them or not. *Note* I would give people you follow 3 days or so before you unfollow them. Of course, there are certain types of people you should unfollow right away. Those I will cover next.
*People You Should Unfollow Right Away*
Since there is a cap on how many people you can follow relative to the number of people following you, you certainly don't want any duds taking up any spots. Let me share with you the following traits that will always make me unfollow someone.
- People with a company logo as their picture: This is an automatic goodbye from me. People who push their company in front of themselves are out to form one-way streets. In other words, their after you for 2 reasons; to check out their blog and maybe even buy into their system.
- People who tweet nothing but links: Don't get me wrong, tweeting links is great and often times is the best way to get retweets. Just be sure you're links and tweets bring something to the table. People who bring nothing to the table and simply tweet links to no one and everyone at the same time can do nothing for you.
- Negative Attitudes: Stray as far away from negativity as possible. I cannot stress enough how important it is to create a postivie overall ambience of followers in order to push yourself and your following to new levels.
This is it for now, if you have any questions or concerns please leave them right here as comments. I love all feedback and appreciate all my readers, thanks for stopping by. :)
