What is Spam?

Spam is simply unwanted unsolicited advertisement.

  1. Unwanted meaning you didn't ask for it..
  2. Unsolicited meaning you have no connection with the person giving it to you.
  3. Advertisement meaning an offer/sale/promotion etc etc.

All of these must apply to the advertisement for it to be considered spam!

Example of non-spam advertisement:

A person sends you a personal message about an offer AFTER making a connection with you. Once you hand over your contact info they can legally and ethically send you info about there business. Until you request them to take you of their list they can keep doing so. The honorable person/company would stop sending you anything after you say no thanks.

What is a Spammer?

A Spammer is a term given to a person who takes part in all 3 qualifications for spam. Some of these Spammers are offensive and very persistant. These spammers are the ones who give legitimate marketers a bad name. They will not stop until you tell them to remove you from their contact list.

Spam post by Cliff Covill

Thanks Cliff for that definition of spam for us newbies.

Question for Cliff & anyone else out there with an opinion:  so the site (like) Integiant (and others) that is listed here on BetterNetworker as an advertising agent, has a program of 2.5 million email addresses . . . so if we use that service to try and find folks for our downline or our products is considered spam, why is it offered?

I suppose I don't mind spam because I'm always looking for new offers, products & companys to be involved in online and if they don't spam me with their offers, I don't know where to look . . .

Sorry if it's a dumb question for a newbie, but lots of my friends are newbies just getting on the web and no one I know has any answers.  Teach us!  Thanks.  Glenn Robertson

Hi Glenn

Technically speaking if you contact a person before you send them an offer this is not spam. You have developed a relationship first. You have followed the law.

The only problem is these websites are privately owned, just like most websites on the Internet. What goes on in the website is controlled by the owners of the website. So you have to follow there rules or they have all the right in the world to remove your membership and ban you from the website for life.

A good practice is to build a relationship or at least make a connection/friendship with someone first before you tell them about your business proposal. Try not to offer one of those get rich ponzi schemes that request up front fees to be a part of. This could get you some large ammounts of unwanted feedback. A real network marketing company pays it's reps to market for them, not the other way around!!

A new idea if anyone cares to develop it!!!!

A True Marketing Website!! No Scams Allowed!!

This would be a community that welcomes a legitimate opportunity. But also reports the unethical and illegal ones. The main difference with this website would be that in order to log in you must first view an opportunity of your choice and make at least 5 connection requests.
Someone or a group of people familiar with Federal Laws on Ponzi Schemes would have to review an ad that was submitted for review before it was posted on the website. From there its success and popularity would determine its placement rank on the website.
Just an Idea?

Wow, I really LOVE my SPAM usually fried maybe with Green Eggs; But I Love SPAM....so why must you call this other stuff afternoon my favorite canned meat?

I don't pick one you favorite foods? I don't email you more junk than you can read. (But, give me a chance I can provide you with ALL you want)

Just had to have some humorous fun!

BTW: Thanks some marketers need to get focused and save those of us that suffer from the ill regrade of email marketing, or even banners and pop-ups.

If you want to see my ads try alittle harder I am NOT hiding them.......

I used to hate spam however

I used to hate spam however I now have a SPAM response in a Notepad file that invites them to promote their business opportunity to thounsands of business people without having to spam. For each one that joins my team in that way i get the commission. Sends some of the off the deep end and other actually join:) I also unsubscribe immediately from their list and if they don't have unsubscribe information I remind them of the law and if I receive another I'll forward it to the relevant SPAM body for their country.

Spam, Yuck

My husband loves SPAM sandwiches.(yuck)

I hate SPAM messages (yuck) unless of course, they find their way into my "spam" folder. Then I just ZAP them.

No way to unsubscribe

What do you do if they say 'click here to unsubscribe' that takes you to the sales page with no unsubscribe button. You send an email through the contact us link and it gets ignored.
The worst on I have come across is 'The Canadian Pharmacy'

re: No way to unsubscribe

Hey Dennis, So sorry for the delayed response as I have had a crazy summer. Unfortunately this is the case with many auto responders and why I think auto responders are a piece of crap and are killing the marketing industry. I would report them immediately if they do not have a link to click confirming you have been removed from there list or instructions on how to do so with a confirmation. Give them a week for confirmation then report them.
