Where Are The Jobs For Retired and Laid-Off Workers?
With massive layoffs and cutbacks occurring across the US, many are looking for a way to get back into the work force or to increase their reduced income.
According to AARP Magazine, March/April 2009 issue, direct sales through home parties and home business is a growing area.
Direct Sales Businesses Boom As Economy Tightens
AARP also sees Internet Marketing as a place to make money right now, for women specifically, but men as well.
Sweet Times For a Web Based Business
AARP, the American Association of Retired People is at the forefront of what going on in the job market because of how much retirees and those nearing retirement age have been effected by our economic down turn. There are people in the manufacturing industry who have been at the same job for over 30 years, nearing retirement, used to a very good salary and now they are jobless without the skills for something new.
Direct Selling through the network marketing model (done correctly) could put money back into the pockets of people like this. The idea of getting involved with a reasonable product that can be shared with friends through home parties or social gatherings, is a concept that can appear user-friendly to those needing to earn money in a new manner. Many people in the over 45 generation are now more open to learning to use a computer as well..opening other doors in the marketing arena.
People already involved with network marketing / MLM, particularly those with easy products, everyday items or those that do not need a lot of explaination would be wise to open their hearts and minds to potential prospect in the older generation. Even those already retired are presently feeling the pinch of reduced pensions or 401K's that have taken a big hit. These people might welcome an offering of a fun way to bring extra cash and also social engagement into their lives.

Back to School for the AARP Folks
Nice article here Deborah, I have a couple thoughts and opinions.
1. Network marketing, and specifically, internet network marketing is exactly where I'd advise near retirement or retired people to go for more money.
It's smarter than driving car parts across town for Lents, or greeting people with carts at Walmart or Meijer.
But it also requires more "brain effort," and might not pay for the first 3-9 months. In fact, to the contrary, these individuals will have to invest in the opportunity and invest in adding to their own skills. For some, that may mean a profound enhancement of skills from the ground on up.
So I think it's so important that they fully understand this...at a minimum, $500 will be needed, and that's to build it on a budget. And more than likely, it will cost 2 or 3 times as much.
2. I am of the opinion that a majority of the people in the demographic, hire a personal coach to assist and guide them in the 5 following aspects:
3. It takes a special person to be able to properly teach, have the time, patience and care to work with tech-challenged retirement aged newbies.
From my experience with a couple coaching clients who fit this description, I found it was nearly more trouble than it was worth. Furthermore, I quickly realized that they were paying me for answers not understandings. Big difference. There really aren't answers, no magic pill or button that makes it all work and come together, but rather, it's a slow understanding of how everything works together synergistically.
I now am much more cautious about coaching people in this demographic, yet at the same time, much more generous with my time and free assistance.
Good Points Eric
Thanks Eric for your thoughtful comment. There are some options within the network marketing arena that address the issues you brought up..particulaly the ones regarding the need for a "profound enhancement of skills". Many products that are sold through the network marketing model are simple, everyday products that people are familiar with. Yes, there are those of us who approach our network marketing business as a serious business with our eye on substantial income and the growth of a large organization.
But for someone needing just some extra part-time money, they could run their business primarily as a direct sales business and market their products through their social groups and gatherings. Yes, this sounds like "Old School" network marketing and it is. But we must remember that people have been making money (especially in the $500-$1000 per month range) with these kind of methods for over 70 years. Retirees are often very involved with civic, community or religious organizations. It is beneficial for them in a multitude of ways to have a focus and a reason to get out and interact with others. Having some friends over for a Silver Jewelry party or to experience a nice meal using Pampered Chef kitchen products, or for a tea party with some new interesting teas from around the world, is a fun and often profitable thing to do. Many of these kinds of companies have a very low start-up cost..sometimes as low as $25-$50.
There will be those who want to take it to the next level and that is where there will be a need for learning a new skill set. Given the many different avenues available for successful marketing, not just those that involve the computer, I believe this industry is not only a good one for this demographic but also an accesible one.
