I was reading an article about the Spanish American War and came across an account of a person that understood the meaning of the words “Just Do It”.
The president of the United States needed to get an urgent message to the leader of the insurgents fighting against the Spanish.
The leaders name was Garcia and he was known to be fighting somewhere in the mountains of Cuba. There was no mail or telegraph lines in the remote area where his camp was located. No one knew exactly where this camp was no one had been able to reach him.
One of the president’s military advisors said that he knew of an individual that could find Garcia. He said “There's a fellow by the name of Rowan who will find Garcia for you if anybody can”.
So Rowan was summoned and the situation was explained. Rowan took the letter without hesitation. He sealed it in a leather pouch strapped over his heart.
He landed in the dark of night off the coast of Cuba and made his way into the mountains, and after much difficulty, found Garcia. He handed him the letter, turned around and headed home.
Rowan didn't ask, "Exactly where is he?" or "I doubt if I can do it." There was a job to be done and he did it. Instead of making a dozen excuses why he couldn’t complete the task he just went in and did what was necessary at the moment to find Garcia. Because he did not dwell on reasons he could not… he “Just Did It”.
How many times have you been guilty of creating obstacles (excuses) that lead to failure? The excuses (doubt) you put in your mind will seal the fate of any venture.
When you have a tough job to do start by determining your best option, proceed knowing that if it turns into a dead-end you can revaluate and proceed in a new direction. This option is available until you reach your final objective. “Just Do It” don’t concern yourself with the reasons it wont work think only of what needs to be done next to fulfill the goal.

Thank you Elwood, I love reading your posts as they are very inspirational and evocative. I'm as guilty of anyone of creating my own obstacles. Somehow it seems easier to blame an excuse than to risk failure. We tend to travel the paths of least resistance. Easier to use an excuse, use the excuse. It takes concious effort to over-ride that process. That concious effort becomes easier and easier the more we take deliverate actions in our daily lives. Waking up and taking responsibility is the toughest part. Get that done and the rest is cake. I like cake :)
