Why Positioning Yourself As an Expert is Important

When you work in consulting, the service industry, sales, or even working from home there is one important tactic for you to succeed in business - position yourself as an expert. Why is it important to position yourself as an expert? When you position yourself as expert, it makes you more credible. When you position yourself as an expert, people (clients, customers) come to you. When you position yourself as an expert, business becomes simple.

Surprisingly, becoming an expert is not that difficult and you don't need to be the foremost expert on your field - just knowledgeable enough to be dependable. Here are several tactics you can try in order to gain ground and position yourself as an expert in your field:

Be a source of information - One good way for people to view you as an expert is to provide them with good information. Better yet, make this information free. If people need information about the state of the real estate market in your area, and you happen to have it, provide it. If you get to the point where people seek you out for information, then you know your bid to position yourself as an expert has succeeded.

Contribute articles - one of the easiest and most cost effective ways you can do to position yourself as an expert is to contribute to your local publications. You can contact your local magazine or newspaper and offer articles, free of charge on topics you are knowledgeable about and are related to your business. Real articles get more attention than ads, and when people are able to tie your byline to a specific subject, then you're on your way to being considered an expert.

Be a Resource Speaker - one surefire way to position yourself as an expert is to accept speaking engagements. When you talk and people listen (of course you have to know what you are talking about) you instantly become an expert in their eyes. The more speaking engagements you accept, the more you will be seen as an expert.

Write a (good) book - People tend to believe in something more if it is written down. It can be either a newspaper article, an internet article or a book. Never underestimate the power of the written word. If you can make a good book that will help a lot of people, you have made great progress in your goal to position yourself as an expert.

Be an Instructor - Teachers are viewed as some of the most credible people around. A teaching gig can be a great way to position yourself as an expert. If you can parry your way into teaching, that adds to your credibility.

There are still many more ways for you to position yourself as an expert, but the above strategies will already go a long way. Start now and you'll soon be reaping the benefits of your new status as "expert" in your own field.
