You Don't Know What You Don't Know
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
This might be one of the most powerful phrases I have ever heard. If you’ve ever stopped and really considered what it means, you know what I‘m talking about. Think about something that you have been newly exposed to recently… did you know anything about it a year ago? Did you even know it existed a year ago?
We all have things we want to know more about, things that are on our list of “ToDo’s.” Some want to study copywriting, others want to learn more about SEO, or free lead generation, etc… but think about those things specifically. Before you were involved in network marketing, did you even know any of those things existed, much less want to learn more about them?
Lynne and I attended a seminar this afternoon where we learned a long list of things that we had no previous knowledge of, and we both walked away feeling astounded by the amount of information we had just absorbed.
If there is one thing we have found in this industry, is that it is virtually impossible to go a single day without learning something. Anyone who is actively working their business, actively reaching out to other networkers, reading books, blogs, newsletters and articles will find themselves constantly exposed to volumes upon volumes of topics that they had no previous exposure to.
It’s GREAT!!
That type of knowledge opens new doors and new possibilities. For example, the conference that we attended today opened our eyes to totally new opportunities for our future, things we had never heard of or thought of. Things that could have a major impact on our lives in the years to come… things that, 24 hours ago, we had no idea even existed. It’s astounding.
You don’t know what you don’t know.
There are so many things in this world that we all have yet to be exposed to. So many things we have yet to learn. Think of all the things you know now that you didn’t know anything about a year ago. Really think about it. How have those experiences changed you or your business? Now think about how much information you will be exposed to over the next year. And the next. And so on. Simply accepting the fact that none of us know what we don’t know, and being open to new things that come our way, offers an unlimited potential for us to grow ourselves and our businesses.
My wife has a favorite saying, “It’s a big world.” It’s actually more of an inside joke between us than a saying, and she’ll probably roll her eyes when she sees that I wrote it in this article, but stop to think about the fact that it really is a BIG world. There is so much in it that you have never even heard of, so much information that will be of value you to you, and all you have to do is go out looking for it.
We should all make it a personal quest to seek out new information on at least a daily basis - and then share that information with as many interested people that you think will benefit.
Only by learning do we continue to grow, and you’d be absolutely amazed to find out what you don’t know.

Chad,
I enjoyed your article. The concept you discussed actually has a name. Psychologists call it "unconscious incompetance". It's the first of four phases that make up the Conscious Learning Matrix. You shouldn't have any trouble finding general information about the matrix on the net. In my book, I discuss how it applies specifically to prospecting. The matrix is a fascinating subject that applies to everything that requires us to learn new skills.
Keep up the good work.
Blindspots...
That's right, man. It is often our human tendency to convince ourselves that we know enough so that we've found truth. Our opinions and actions are based on the limited knowledge we have, and we want everyone else to believe that we are right (when in reality, we have no idea).
And as you expand your knowledge, your truth will change with it.
Being aware of these blinspots is what makes you wise, not how much you know.

You are so right. When I
You are so right. When I took the first course on learning the PC I never dreamed of the fact that I would never stop learning!! Enjoyed the comments also. Amazing how folk suddenly appear who have had experience in the thought just written.
Oh, another thought.....one guy I read about made most of his cash by just saying "I don't know, all I know is........" and then added what he knew. So, good to 'also know that we do know' something to pass on.
Wish you success in applying what you learned.
Blessings
