Your Business - Everything has Changed - Part Three
Foundational to Your Business Success
The idea that everything has changed is a foundational commitment which precedes the setting of goals, planning ahead, and even the most important part of any business – SALES! Nothing happens in a business if you have no sales especially when you start an online business because marketing is your main challenge. But if you have not bought into the idea that everything has changed, it won’t matter how many sales you have. You can have lots of sales and no profit because you are thinking and operating like the big boys and not realistically in your new business.
You can write orders all day long. You can build the best product, or represent the best manufacturer. But you will not last very long if you have not already resolved yourself to take full responsibility for every decision you make. There is no shared responsibility as there is in Corporate America. You will not be able to carry these responsibilities to another person in authority because you are The authority.
It Doesn’t Take Much To Throw You Off Track
When I got off track about thirty years ago and began to think like I was some kind of a big shot and could operate in similar fashion to that of corporate America it cost me dearly. I found myself with exorbitant overhead expenses. Then a small economic downturn occurred in the early eighties. I had incurred significant debt by purchasing two other similar businesses (the merger and buyout mentality of big business). Those combinations of financial stress created a situation that drowned me- I filed for a corporate bankruptcy but had personally signed for most of the obligations and it subsequently took years to retire the hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt I had incurred.
Before you get too far down the line as you start an online business, take a few minutes to reflect on the concept of embracing a new perspective - the idea that everything has changed. And particularly if you are coming from the corporate world. Build into your plans, a way to be sure your goals embody this idea, so you don’t lose sight of it when the going gets tough. Find a friend who is in business for himself, with whom you can interact, so you can get his views when you are making
decisions about your new venture, so you can maintain the proper perspective. Actually, when you start an online business you really need to be part of a team (coming article).
More people bail out of the small business environment, before they really ever start an online business because they have not prepared for the inevitable challenges which face the small business community. Don’t let this happen to you. Realize ahead of time that difficulties will come and these may seem to be more than you can bear - but nothing could be further from the truth. You may have been previously conditioned to react a certain way because you had the “cushion” of a boss or a workmate, or a budget that could absorb some of the shock when you worked for someone else.
