Your Marketing Message: Weak And Desparate Or Sexy and Attractive?
You know how we tend to be attracted to people places and things that seem exclusive, highly desirable and even expensive? Just the thought that "good _____ is hard to find" is enough to pique our curiosity.
Maybe you remember taking advantage of someone in a relationship that was a bit of a pushover? They would do or say anything to just be with you. They seem to think that by conforming to your every whim they were doing something great...WRONG!
Desperation is so not sexy and highly unattractive however many marketing messages today still use this approach.
Which Message Is your Marketing Portraying To Your Audience?
Some of the our content on the Internet just seem a little and sometime a lot desperate. In this article I want to share an observation that may apply to you or those on your team about how to avoid coming across as needy in your marketing (ads, articles, blog post, videos, podcast etc.).
Starting from some of the titles and leading into the body copy, even signature lines and bio boxes, you'll notice the ones just begging for attention by using language that conveys desperation. Words like "hope" or "please" as in "Please Read This Article" or "Hope you check out my website".... umm, NO! I won't and neither will your ideal prospects.
And here's why.
I'm not convinced that me clicking is going to do anything but give you another undeserved set of eye balls. You want prospects to click? Then give a bit more of a reason than the fact that you are being polite in asking. Your potential prospects don't want to just do you a favor... they want to know that there is something of value in your offer.
A Compelling Offer Means You Don't Have To Beg
Here are some examples I've personally come across:

Do you notice any of your own desperate cries for attention here? Would you take the offer?
Now, please don't get me wrong, that's not to say that just using the word please automatically makes you desperate. There's another trend in the examples above that you may have over looked. They are begging for an action... Please: see, visit, have a look, go watch, join etc.
The Best Business Is The One You Didn't Even Have To Ask For
If you haven't naturally compelled your potential reader with your headline to open your content or you call to action in the body copy or at the end is weak, you've lost your audience and therefore sales. You've just taken money out of your pocket literally if by no other way, spending the time creating weak content with a limp, desperate call to action.
Some will love it so much they will be passed around virally bring you and endless stream of referral with out even a thank you... although you should always say thanks when you know where your referrals are coming from.
