Zig Ziglar's Famous Quote, Do You Know It?

There's a famous quote by Zig Ziglar I have in mind... see if you can identify it by the end of this article. I had dinner last night with a mentor of mine whom I respect tremendously, Chief Master Taejoon Lee of Hwa Rang Do (Complete Martial Art).

Chief Master Taejoon Lee

One of the most amazing thing about Master Lee that I just couldn't quite grasp was the fact that there was something about him that made people want to do things for him - without expecting anything in return. For the longest time I couldn't quite figure out why this is.

Is It Some Form of Black Magic?

I kept asking myself, "why do people find themselves wanting to help this man?"

It can be the simplest of things such as picking up more water at the grocery store on the way to the martial art school and simply promoting his school; or it can be more involved matters such as helping him deal with the legality of running the martial art school, helping him market Hwa Rang Do, and even helping keep the school running smoothly while he is on travel.

As a matter of fact, Fernando and I have been helping him market online since 2006, - all for free and without expecting anything in return. I finally got a chance to inquire about this matter - to see if I can find the answer. What I discovered is so simple yet so often overlooked. We do things for him without expecting anything in return because he does the same.

The "Ah-Ha" Moment! And I Didn't Even Have to Twist His Arm!

(... not that I could even if I wanted to ...) Simply put, it's a matter of reciprocation. We see how much time, effort, and love he puts into being a mentor to all of his students - and we appreciate that.

I don't want to get into a whole spill on the transformation of martial arts as we know it but suffice to say, Master Lee is so much more than about just teaching you how to kick ass and be kick ass - he's teaching you to be a warrior and beyond that, a better person.

As a result, we want to reciprocate that same devotion in whatever ways we can. This, I've discovered, is why people want to do things to help him. It's our way of saying thanks and letting him know we appreciate what he is doing.

Wait... is He Really Zig Ziglar in Disguise?

I spoke with him about this matter because frankly, I wanted to know what traits inspire this in people - what do I have to do and how do I have to be to invoke the same inspiration in those people whose lives I touch?

He says it's a simple matter of caring and being willing to give without expecting anything in return. It's a matter of being able to give love and not having to take love.

After all, a person of strength is capable and willing to give love while a person of weakness hoards it.

Now would everyone you meet in life and care about be a person of strength and reciprocate? Absolutely not.

You will no doubt come across those that will leech off of you for all you are worth. They will take from you and they will not even bother to thank you. But this should not stop you from being strong - as a matter of fact, you should become stronger.

Rest assured, by being a person who genuinely cares and are willing to give love, you are bound to come across those who share the same philosophy (whether they know it or not). These people are bound to be in your life for a long time to come.

That forms the strongest of bonds and the purest form of relationships - as long as you appreciate and never abuse that special connection. As we say in Hwa Rang Do -

"One Horsed Warrior Conquers a Thousand."

Strive to be that one horsed warrior and you are bound to attract other horsed warriors. It's a matter of giving without receiving.

Martial Art, Love, Generosity, and Business

Abide by this principle in your business - treat your clients and prospects the same way, add value to their lives and you will inevitably form solid relationships. (Of course, as Master Lee says, don't be a fool and give without heeding whom you are giving to - because that's not being strong, that's just being stupid.) I have come a long way - I started out in business wanting to make money only for the sake of money; after all, what did I know about business and life's goals?

I've since then progressed. I know there is - no, there HAS to be a higher calling - than just money. Have I concretely figured out what it is? No. But it's taking form and I am coming closer and closer to understanding that. And I get a sense that this talk with Master Lee has helped shape it that much more.

Did You Get It?

Can you identify the famous quote by Zig Ziglar? And can you see how you can apply this what you are doing on BetterNetworker.com?

I’m Honoured to be a part of the team.

I have to say, I was a student in the past for ninjutsu, ( when I was a kid) until I started working for a boss and found 8/10 people leeching of others for all we are worth.

So thanks for making this article it was very touching and made me think, "Stay strong David because as you have found in the past, you will still find great Warrior's."

Good ol' Zig (I think the Buddha said it first)

The Buddha said, "One cannot pour perfume onto others without getting some on yourself."

Zig said, "You will get whatever you want when you help enough people get what they want."

Peace.

This philosophy of giving

This philosophy of giving without expecting in return is the basis for all servant leadership. It is the principle that makes every venture successful if we don't give up on people.

Thanks for a great post!

No one can say it better

Raymond I agree.

"by being a person who genuinely cares and are willing to give love, you are bound to come across those who share the same philosophy (whether they know it or not). These people are bound to be in your life for a long time to come. "  No one could have it said better, than you.

I always lived by that rule.  I have met people who did not share the same philosophy. Perhaps, they never were taught, or reached out to learn. Once we built a relationship, they adapted that attribute.  They now share the same philosophy.  It feels good to help make people lives better.

Very insightful

This is a great article.  I too sometimes struggle with the mission beyond making money, so it was good to read that you wonder abou that too.  Like you, I feel like I'm getting closer.

I do feel your strong intent to intent to help me (and the rest of us in this community).  I often wish for more strength and knowledge to be able to reciprocate, and give back to you.

Best,

Shecky

And this is what makes BN.com go round and round...

Thank you all for your encouraging words!

I hope to shed light on the philosophy we should think about adhering to when we are utilizing this (free) amazing resource in BetterNetworker.com.

It's so simple, just give! Give and you shall receive! And realize that "giving" can'r be faked or inauthentic - people will sense that. Give from the position of strength and abundance and good things will happen to you and your business.

Cheers!

I Must Agree

This Really is the only way to have a meaningful life with or with out Money.  It is truely the only thing worth living for is the right to LOVE.  the question in life should always be how many people did I love?  and the more you grow as a person the more people you can love OH wow what a life.  Your Friend for LIfe Juanita Waterman

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

As a long time Martial Artists myself I can totally relate to Master Lees philosophy,I experienced the same thing with my Master instructor years ago.One of the requirements we had to do before obtaining our Black Belt was to write an essay on "What Karate means to me"and I still remember as I wrote mine how much of a changed person I had become.

The Martial Arts is not about being boastful and intimidating its about developing humbleness and being one with the human spirit.Once you reach this point in your journey, giving without wanting becomes an unconscious though that will attract people to you for the rest of your life.

Great article Raymond, from one Martial Artists to another.Chin Goo,Kyung Neh!

Raymond I thank you for

Raymond I thank you for sharing your friend with us as well as your growth through his example.  You are spot on with "I know there is - no, there HAS to be a higher calling - than just money."  When we start a business we think it's all about money...RIGHT NOW!  To truly be successful, we must realize it is a journey that begins with this exact philosophy..."If we help enough other people get what they want...we will ultimately get what we want."  Sometimes it requires patience with ourselves to master skills and to master our emotions so that we can become selfless to succeed!  If we come from the heart, with a little time we will have the success, but more importantly we will have the character, respect, integrity and truth that makes one a success.

Thank you again!

Winning Philosophy

Raymond, as a retired Martial Artist I totally agree.

One has to give before one can get.

This is a totally win, win philosophy, we need to give thanks everyday for what we have, and for what we are about to receive.

If it's meant to be it's up to me...

Great Post.

Thanks John

Journey To Success

Being in business for yourself can be humbling, can't it?  We join an opportunity with dollar signs in our eyes and motivation in our hearts and off we go into the wild blue yonder.  But wait!  You hit a wall and then question yourself -- what am I doing wrong??

I too had to retrain myself into GIVING not getting.  I joined a networking group on Bright Fuse and I volunteered my group site to help people with their resumes.  I've critiqued and rewrote many resumes over the past several months.  And this was on top of running my business!  I became overwhelmed at times, but I saw the happiness in people when they received their resumes and their "ah hah" moment was "I didn't see my resume before, but NOW I see it is great."  These same people began to receive calls for interviews.  I don't know if any were hired, but they were more confident in themselves and that was what mattered most.

People now come to me and praise my helpfulness.  I am now charging and people are happy to pay.  I gained their respect and confidence.  If someone cannot pay, and their circumstances are such, I will volunteer my time.  It has come back to me tenfold.

Helping people find their worth in life is so important.  In a way, we are all caregivers.

Same

I experienced the same thing when I was in high school. My band instructor was able to pull the very best out of our little school's band. He was a quiet gentle man, in general students can be rowdy and disrespectful. Not in band practice, he had our attention, he had our respect and we all gave our absolute best for him. This little community had one of the top bands in the state, we rated high at every competition and it was almost unbelievable what we achieved, because he believed. When I look back, I always marvel at what he accomplished and the values and confidence that he instilled in us. He gave without want, WE FELT valued and cared for ...it attracted us and brought out the very best in all of us. When people truly see you as a special, trusted friend and confidante, you are on the right track.

The Art of Giving

No man is an island and this article reflects it best by showing how this Grand Master lives.  He has carved out an existence that is naturally attractive and inviting.  He does not shun others because they are not an equal peer.  All great men let other men save face.

As an irrigator guides water to his fields, as an archer aims an arrow, as a carpenter carves wood, the wise shape their lives. -- Buddha

So, learn from the wisdom stored in this article.  Thanks Ray for sharing - really good!

LOVE is the Key

Thanks again, Raymond, for your incredible input &  sincere value to the BetterNetworker community. Your contributions toward the increasing successes of others is evident in your articles.

I appreciate all the comments. I also agree with what Zig said, "You will get whatever you want when you help enough people get what they want." Ziglar also stated that, "Success means doing the best we can with what we have. Success is the doing, not the getting, in the trying, not the , triumph. Success is a personal standard, reaching for the highest that is in us, becoming all that we can be." (italics added )

Jesus Christ said it this way, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows." Galatians 6:7 (NIV) I believe that when you sow good deeds (like giving), you reap good deeds (like receiving). Acts 20:35 (NIV) states that, "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "

What better season and time of year than this...to be mindful that we should GIVE instead of just receiving.

So, go and give!!

I love Zig Ziglar

I have heard some of his videotapes & he just comes across as a very genuine no BS person.  Thanks for the article.  It is true that especially in this industry (Network Mktg)  you cannot get ahead if you don't help others get what they want.  thanks for reminding me of that =)

My first time here

Hi Raymond,

I'm a long time fan of Zig. Love his stuff. Saw him on stage a couple of years ago and will probably go see him again this year in Sacramento.

Funny this is my first time on this site and I ran into this article. I've noticed your marketing of  Master Lee on the web. As an internet marketer I was impressed so I watched a bit of his videos. I was pretty impressed with that also.

I keep running into stuff about him so you are doing great.

I'm also a kung fu teacher by trade. Your article really struck home. I had noticed this phenomena many times and have seen it rudely taken advantage of also. I removed a school owner from my system for doing that. It can really be damaging.

Anyway, great article and great marketing. good for you.

Now if only I had a couple of students to take over my internet marketing :-)

Phil

P.S. this looks like a great site and built in drupal too. My favorite.

Humbled

I want to be honest as I can be. I know that religion is taboo but "If a man doesn't stand for some thing he will fall for anything". Out side of my belief system that has carried me through adversity time and time again, I find this the most remarkable teaching other than the perfect love of Christ. I don't know if you ever read John of the cross or studied Christian Zen as I have, But this post is one of the best I have herd in a long time.

The Idea Of Getting Stronger...

I liked the part about even though people will take ,take ,take ,and take i think you get it. You should grow stronger simply because you are strong ,but don't for get that they do this because they are weak. You have no control over this it is and you can not stop it trying to do so will only hinder you so just let this be the way it was set up.

I loved this thanks
