Setting Up Facebook

Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. The websites name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with fellow computer science major students and his roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while he was a student at Harvard University. Website membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It later expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website currently has more than 200 million active users worldwide.

Things you will need:

E-MAIL ADDRESS WITH ANY (GMAIL, YAHOO, HOTMAIL, etc)

STEPS TO FOLLOW WHEN JOINING FACEBOOK

Visit Facebook at http://www.facebook.com and fill in your personal details which are all compulsory like:

FIRST NAME
LAST NAME
YOUR E-MAIL
NEW PASSWORD
I AM (This is the Gender Field)
BIRTHDAY

2. Click on "Sign Up" button to get started. Before you sign up, you can "Take the Tour" or look for friends.

3. Fill in your name, email address and birthday. You will also be asked to select if you're in college, at a company, in high school or none of those. What you select will determine your main network.

4. Complete the Security check by writing the “Security Code” in the text box given below. The user will have to type the characters and numbers the same way as given. Then click on “Sign Up”.

5. After the above fields are fulfilled click on the button called “Go To Hotmail now” (Varies depending on your E-Mail address)

6. Check your email. A confirmation will arrive with a link to confirm your email. If you don't see it right away, check you spam or junk mail folder. Sometimes the link might take some time to arrive to your inbox, so please be patient!

7. Your registration is complete and verified!

HOW TO FIND FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK

There are many different ways to find friends on Facebook website. One of the best ways is to invite your friends from your E-mail account. The steps are as below:

1. After you have clicked on the Link that was sent to you on your E-mail account, it will take you to your account directly. All you have to do is, click on “Find your Friends” button.

2. The above step will automatically retrieve your contacts and add them to your Facebook account.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE (Remember to brand YOURSELF)

1. Log in to your Facebook account by entering your E-mail and password as shown in the screen shots below:

2. Click on “View and Edit your Profile” link

3. Fill in the details like “Basic Information”, “Personal Information, “Contact Information”, “Education and Work”. All the 4 screen shots are given as below:

4. Set up your profile and look for friends. Once you have joined Facebook, you can start adding friends and coworkers. Fill in as much detail as possible on your profile so people can find you easily.

HOW TO JOIN A NETWORK ON FACEBOOK

1. Log in to Facebook with your email address and password and click on “Login” button located at the top right corner.

Tip: Do not click on “Remember Me” check box button unless you are using it from home. It’s to avoid chances of other people using your account and SPAMMING people.

2. On your first log in, you will land on a page with directions for joining a network.

3. Join a regional network. Under "Country" select the data as you wish. And Click “Join” button.

4. Select any of the three options that suit you the best in finding your friends.

5. That's all there is to it.

HOW TO POST ON YOUR FRIEND(s) PROFILE?

It’s easy to post on your friend’s profile, once you have added him or her to your contact.

1. Hover your mouse over the “Friends” link located at the top

2. Click on the “Recently Added” and it will take you to a page which will show you a list of all your friends added.

3. Click on the name of the friend you want to post a message on his or her wall. This will open the Wall Post page of your friend.

4. Then you will find a text box titled “Write something…”. Here you can write a message to your friend and then click on the “Share” button.

5. After the above step is done, you will see a confirmation with your written post on your friend’s profile. See below screen shot.

That pretty much sums up how to set up, and start using your Facebook account.

Now remember what I said...make sure that you brand yourself and NOT your product or company. This is VERY important to building credibility and getting to know people as a real person and not as a product or company.

One of the main reasons that you want to do this is because you never know if for some unknown reason, your company goes out of business or you decide you are not happy with them, you would have to start all over and that is no fun once you have built a huge network. So by branding yourself, you will never have to "Re-Brand" your profiles.
