Programming The Mind - Scary?

I don't know about you, but whenever I hear someone mention anything to do with 'programming' your mind I tend to think of Charles Manson or Jonestown. There's a major difference though between that kind of programming and the type of programming that takes place as a result of personal development. Firstly, in personal development it is voluntary. Rather than someone else trying to 'program' your thoughts and attitudes, personal development is all about re-programming your own mind. Another major difference is that the type of programming we talk about in personal development is, more or less, a corrective action to undo the previous damage that has been done in our day to day lives.

I know that many people still find that hard to believe - the mere thought that they might have been 'programmed' throughout their lives is just a silly conspiracy theory, right? When I'm talking to those people I substitute the word 'programmed' with the word 'convinced'. You see it's a lot easier to accept that you've been CONVINCED that you will never achieve success, or never get that new house, or never afford that new car than it is to believe that you have been 'programmed'.

I think it's a good example of how a small change in the language you use can make a significant difference in how the message is received. If you have any aspirations to be a public speaker then it's worthwhile to tune and hone your vocabulary so that you get the most impact with your audience.
