Multilevel marketing or MLM Business, before it was made synonymous with pyramiding schemes, is a legitimate and can be a viable business plan. It is a strategy where one person who is selling a product builds a network of like-minded entrepreneurs (the "downline") and gets commission from their sales as well as from his own personal sales. MLM business was never a bad idea, per se, because it was flexible, accessible to almost anybody who can invest (and often times not that much investment is needed, nor a lot of academic background), and it cut down the prices for the consumers by a good margin.

Two-Way Street

The main concept of being in the MLM business is that you cut out the middleman from the picture by going straight to the supplier, giving them direct access to the market without large costs. In doing so, consumers get their products at a much lesser cost without compromising the quality of the items. These two things mentioned above are the key targets of the Multilevel marketing - that is to say, quality products without hurting the budget.

For more concrete examples, take Tupperware and Avon. These are a couple of the pioneers in the MLM business. Now, do you think they ever scammed people?

Picking the Right One

Be very meticulous when it comes to picking out the MLM business that would benefit you. One should pick and probe to avoid any involvement with an illegal MLM business. Putting your heart, mind, and soul into this business would make managing it even easier. Also, don't hesitate to ask help if ever you need any, especially from the people around you.

If the profit of the MLM business that you are looking at depend mostly on how much "downline" you can build and not concentrate on the sales that you yourself make, chances are it is a pyramiding scheme, and you are best served to stay away from it.
