3 Little Piggies

One of the mistakes that every network marketer makes at first (and even on an ongoing basis) is to be too keen to sponsor people into their business. Not only do you run the risk of scaring people away, by being the pushy salesman, but you also run the greater risk of sponsoring everyone and anyone.

“What’s so bad about that?” I hear you ask, well, I will explain… When building anything, you need to put in the time and effort to build something that will stand the test of time. This is true of physical buildings, and just as critical for your business.

Now I’ll just digress a little at this point, I promise it will all come together again at the end… Remember the story of the 3 Little Piggies? When they set out to build houses, one used straw, one used sticks, and one use bricks. I won’t need to remind you what happened with the first two houses, and that the brick house was the one that stopped the big bad wolf in his tracks.

So, consider this, when you build your business, will you use straw, sticks or bricks? Everyone will say “yeah it’s obvious, you have to build with bricks”. The problem is, when you are being overly keen, and sponsoring anyone who will join you, are you checking what you are building with?

Straw people get blown from opportunity to opportunity, you may get some activity out of them for a week or two, but one gust from “the latest new thing” and they will be out of site in the blink of an eye.

Stick people will remain stuck doing the things they have always done. They may seem to be better longer-term prospects, and they may even be saying the right things about what needs doing, but when push comes to shove, they remain stuck in their old behaviours. Things will be “too hard”, they will tell you that “yes I did try that but it didn’t work”. Reality is, these people won’t “stick” at the things they need to.

Now finally you have your bricks; solid, reliable, made of stern stuff, and when built on layer by layer, they form a solid structure. The one caveat here is that you must apply the right mortar to hold everything together. In terms of a network marketing business, that mortar is YOU. More specifically, that mortar is the mentorship, leadership, training and support that you provide to your team.

So ask yourself this, whether you are in that period of initial enthusiasm, or a seasoned campaigner, are you building with bricks, or sticks and straw? Do you have processes in place to help you find the bricks? Do you then provide the neccessary “mortar”?

Fairy tales and fables have long been a source of hidden truths and good advice, and so it is with the 3 Little Piggies.

The question is, are YOU building something that will keep the big bad wolf at bay, or will your business be nothing but a load of huff and puff?
