Major psych study disproves gender stereotypes

A major study has found there is no basis for the perception that men and women are more naturally suited to different occupations and roles.

Psychometric assessment firm SHL recently analysed the occupational personality questionnaires it conducted for clients between 2001 and 2005. These assess individuals' workplace behavioural styles, and included responses from 24,000 men and 14,000 women.

The results showed that the way people prefer to behave at work is not influenced by gender - rather, the male and female responses were almost identical, with the same proportions of each gender answering questions the same way.

For example, says SHL director of professional services, Dr Ray Glennon, "in relation to control and leadership, some men stated they strongly dislike taking charge and prefer other team members to lead, just as some women stated they strongly like to direct and manage people."

He says the results challenge stereotypes, such as women disliking working with numbers, and reiterate the importance of assessing every individual fairly and objectively.

"There is no such thing as an 'average' male or 'average' female," he says.

The research highlights the importance of making no assumptions when recruiting or promoting staff, he says.

The results are also a wake-up call for industries dominated by one gender, such as the minerals and mining sector (where 82 per cent of employees are male), or human resources and PR, which are dominated by women. Glennon says recruiters or employers who are reluctant to recruit a woman for a stereotypically male role, or vice versa, are at risk of missing out on high performers.
