HOW I FOUGHT OFF HYDROPHOBIA
A lot of people have phobias and have tried a lot of things to stop or overcome them without success. Well,I recently developed a phobia for bathing under a running shower. It started the day I rubbed a shampoo on my head and started having my bath under the shower. Suddenly, I started to feel as if I was drowning.Immediately,I stopped the running water and jumped out of the bathroom in fear. Subsequently,taking my bath under a running water became an issue.
I knew I needed to stop the phobia from developing more so, I immediately started to look for solution. I remembered an injunction God gave to Joshua to meditate on His word day and night, after telling Joshua not to be afraid. It then occurred to me that Joshua was probably afraid which was why he was been asked not to be afraid just as a father will tell his fearful child not to be afraid. So, if God told Joshua not to be afraid, I deduced that the next paragraph was how to over come the fear which was "meditate on the word day and night"
It hit me that what causes fear in us is what we are meditating on at the moment of the event that may cause the fear occurs. So if I am under a shower and thinking unconsciously or offhandedly about feeling like drowning, the fear will multiply and I will become more phobic.However, if while the event is happening , I deliberately and actively decide to think about something nice and uplifting, the fear will disappear.
So, what I did was,rub soap on my head go under the shower and start to think about the life of Jesus Christ and before I knew what was happening, I was done bathing. I actively suppressed any thought about the soap on my head, the running shower tap, and my previous fear of water.
Gradually, I did not even know when the phobia disappeared and I now bath regularly under running water.But I think the most important step I took was to confront the fear of the running water and actively choose to ignore its initial effect on me.
So for any one having any kind of phobia, I will suggest these steps to overcoming it
1.FACE WHATEVER IS CAUSING YOU THE FEAR
2.DO NOT TRY TO FIGHT WHAT IS CAUSING YOU THE FEAR
3.PICK UP A THOUGHT ON SOMETHING UPLIFTING AND WONDERFUL
4.ACTIVELY START TO MEDITATE AND DEVELOP THE THOUGHT
5.LET WHAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BE SOMETHING THAT WILL INTEREST AND AFFECT YOU POSITIVELY
