I Don't Know How To Be a Dad

While attending an event sponsored by All Pro Dad’s, I was approached by a man who brought his children to the event. He sincerely looked into my eyes and asked, “Can you help me, because I don’t know how to be a dad?” He went on to say that he never had a dad in his home growing up, so he felt clueless on what he was supposed to do for his family. He found himself uncertain as to whether he was doing the right things for his children.

I applauded him for first of all being there for his family, and caring about whether he was doing a good job or not. There are too many man who have not esteemed their role as a father, or just didn’t understand how important they are to their families.

Psalm 78:5-7 states,

“For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Isreal, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.”

According to this passage, the first thing a father must have in order to be a succesful father is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is this personal relationship whit Jesus that a father is to teach, guide and instruct their children into having for themselves. Why? “That they may set their hope in God.” When we look at the world around us, we can see the effects of hopelessness, and what happens when we forget God’s commandments.
