Market It, Don’t Sell It

It is far better to work SMART than to simply work hard in network marketing. Many people are hard workers but not everyone achieves great things. But how do you work SMART as well as hard?

There are two works which are key to working smart in any business – and network marketing is no exception. Sales and Marketing are two words which, if properly applied, can take your business to another level.

Many people confuse the meaning of these two words. They think they basically mean the same thing. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, when you understand the difference you have the tools work smart and achieve un-dreamed of success

SALES is about PUSH. Pushing a product means that you are trying to convince the customer that they need this product, even if they don’t initially think that they do. It is about persuading the person to change their own opinion to match yours. This is what makes a great sales person – the person who is the better persuader. Even if you eventually manage to bribe or coerce the customer into buying the product, if you haven’t won over his opinion you haven’t done your job properly.

MARKETING is about PULL. Think of it this way – you are trying to pull the customer towards you, not pushing the product or opportunity into their face. The weight loss industry provides a good example – the way to market the product you wish to sell is to use it yourself to loose weight. Then people will be drawn to you, they will ask you, ‘How do you look so good?’ They will be asking you about the benefits and begging to try it. You can then allow them to benefit from your product – there is no pushing involved.

When people come to you it puts your business on a very different footing. Having your customers coming to you eager to try out your product sets you apart from other businesses and makes it so much easier to succeed.

Not everyone in business understands their TARGET MARKET. Your target market means the group of people who will either benefit from your product or be keen to make money from the opportunity to become a rep themselves. The ideal target market, of course, fulfills both criteria.

It is always wrong to assume your target market is everyone. This not only never works, because it just isn’t possible, it also makes the rep look and seem desperate, and gives the industry the wrong image. Working smart means identifying your target market and then targeting them and them only. A really good way to waste your time is to think that everyone you meet is your target market and try to get them interested.

It isn’t difficult to identify your target market – you yourself should be representative of it. And once you have, you will be able to employ the tools of sales and proper marketing to draw these customers to you.

I clearly learned by reading Ann Siegs The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing, that everyone is not your prospect. I agree with you people need to zero in on their target market. I found it to be so much easier to use attraction marketing and use SEO techniques to PULL my potential business partners. Great article.
