Mike Dillard Vs. Marty McFly

Indulge my fantasy for a moment as I draw an unlikely comparison.

Anyone that knows me is well aware of my intense appreciation and integration of the "Back to the Future" trilogy in my life. Many people marvel at how often I can thoughtfully add a Delorean or flux-capacitor reference to just about any analogy.

I mean, come on...they are only the awesomest movies ever made for just about anyone over 20 and under 40. So, recently I have been able to draw an interesting comparison between Marty McFly (star of the series) and my mentor, Mike Dillard (rockstar marketer).

Observe...

Marty
The entire "Back to the Future" trilogy seems to be about time displacement upon first glance. But after the first couple of views and some insight from Robert Zemeckis, you soon discover that these movies are more about relationships and the time journey is just a side note.

  • The original "Back to the Future" was not really about getting Marty back to his own time. It was actually about his parents. Marty travelled back in time and served as a catalyst for improving their overall life experience. Marty's presence was mostly the glue that tied everything together. He was the face of the movie that got us to pay attention to the underlying story of self-improvement and the long term consequences of our actions (or lack thereof).
  • "Back to the Future, Part II" was not about saving his future kids from jail time. It was about the power of influence, especially when that influence falls into the wrong hands. This movie showed us that knowledge is POWER and that power can easily be used for personal gain at the expense of other people's lives.
  • "Back to the Future, Part III" was not about saving the Doc from the old west. It was about setting his one-dimensional character free and watching him develop into a romantic, dynamic personality.

Along the way, we always had our trusty nemesis, Biff Tannen. Though reincarnated as Old Biff, Young Biff, Griff, and Buford "Mad Dog", the role was relatively the same...detractor/spoiler/antagonist.

How the heck does all of this relate to Mike Dillard, you ask? Well...

Mike
None of these stories were ever about Marty directly. Sure, the story was told from his point of view, but his role was more of a story broker than anything else.

  • Mike's PPC Domination (a wholly FANTASTIC product) is not really about Mike. He merely uses his influence to draw positive attention to his PPC guru, Jim Yaghi. Anyone who has purchased this product knows that Jim runs the show, but Mike was the one who brought us together.
  • Mike's endorsement of Dave Evans again uses his charisma to endorse a quality product by another competent professional. I bought Dave's book on Mike's recommendation and couldn't be happier at the over-delivery of information and value that Mike pointed me to. I wouldn't have cared or noticed if Mike hadn't shown it to me.
  • Furthermore, Black Belt Recruiting, although heavy on Mike's content, is by his own admission, a hearty reflection of Mike's personal mentor, Mark Wieser. Mike found a way to bring Mark's story to us using his own unique voice, perspective and experience.
  • And finally, Mike's premier product, Magnetic Sponsoring, is AT FIRST a thoughtful reflection on how he became successful. However, when we look below the surface, it's not about Mike at all.....It's about YOU....ME.....US! He uses his own experience to enhance OURS. Who would have thought we needed an outside influence to draw attention BACK to ourselves?

Marty has a permanent arch-rival in Biff. Mike has a permanent arch-rival in lazy, unmotivated people and critics. No matter how far away they may travel, there is always some version of nemesis within arm's reach. That's just a reflection of life.

Mike, like Marty in BTTFIII, prefers not to associate with these a-holes anymore because he knows through experience that people who call you "Yella" are really just "Yella" themselves, and trying to drag you down with them.

In Conclusion
Yes Mike and Marty are quite similar. Mike is a BADASS marketer. Just like Marty is a BADASS guitar player (Johnny B. Goode, anyone?). Both Mike and Marty are quite accomplished in their own respects, and integral to the progression of our own story lines. That is what compels us to pay attention, to look further, to get pulled in to their lives.

I know Mike has turned my career around for the better. So, I'm going to fire up the Delorean, switch on the flux-capacitor and get that baby up to 88 miles per hour to generate the necessary 1.21 gigawatts and blaze a trail about 30 years into the future on my network marketing business.

Well, there is my comparison. Please share your thoughtful reflections. Rants, raves, etc. Pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.
