My thoughts on Chapter One of “Think and Grow Rich”

In chapter one of “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill begins by talking about how “THOUGHTS ARE THINGS” and are very powerful when mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a BURNING DESIRE for their translation into riches, or other material objects.

This statement made me reflect back to one particular success I have had to this point in my life, and how I used the science of which Dr. Hill speaks, to shape a sequence of events which translated focused, repetitive thoughts, and mental images into a desired outcome.

My example was my obsession or constant thoughts about airplanes, and being a pilot. And I assure you I will get around to explaining how this relates to building a successful MLM business. When I thought about flying an airplane, I wanted to learn how to fly at all cost! This is where the THOUGHTS about flying began to be mixed with definiteness of purpose, in other words, I wanted to take lessons to learn how to fly.

Problem was, I was to young to get my student pilot license, so at 12 years of age, I subscribed to flying magazines, I sent away to aircraft companies for color brochures and posters of their particular aircraft. I drew pictures in school, I constructed airplanes out of refrigerator boxes, I became all out obsessed with flying. I would walk out to this farmers grass airstrip about 3 miles out of town from the high school just to sit in his airplane. I gave myself every opportunity to keep airplanes and flying in the forefront of my mind.

Then came persistence. Being too young to get my license, I was still able to attend ground school to prepare me for my written test. I arranged to wash airplanes on Saturday to earn flight time because I did not have the money for lessons. But, I always found my way around the obstacle to arrive at a desired outcome.

All of the ingredients put together created a BURNING DESIRE to accomplish my quest of becoming a pilot. I soloed at 16 yrs. and received my Private Pilots License before graduating High School. Later in life I earned a Bachelors Degree in Aviation Technology, and went on to work as a flight instructor and freight pilot.

So, how does this relate to Hills formula for turning thoughts into material things? I feel my story closely parallels that of Edwin C. Barnes and his BURNING DESIRE to become business partners with Thomas Edison. The desired outcome does not always come on the timetable or in the manner you think it should. However, obstacles that were encountered did not change his mind about the outcome he had desired.

All of this philosophy can be transferred to the building of your MLM. You must fill in each of the categories and define how they relate to your particular situation. You must know WHY you are building your business. You must begin with the end goal in mind, and accept nothing less than the outcome you imagine in your mind. When obstacles arise and they most certainly will, you must be prepared to move forward no matter what. Don’t be like the Uncle of R. U. Darby and quit digging for gold three feet away from a gold deposit worth millions of dollars.

Isn’t it great to know that the pathway to everything we desire has been laid before us, all that is required of us is to want it bad enough to follow the directions and we will be assured we get it.
