While both these components are important they are very different. Understanding the difference and doing your market research can put your business on the path to substantial growth. If you have no prospects or leads to follow up, therefore no list being built for your business, your business will literally come to a stand still with no cashflow.
When It Comes To Marketing And Sales - Selling Is Marketing But Marketing Is Not Selling. Marketing is key to be able to cast your net to teach and persuade prospects. Marketing teaches the consumer why you should have this product and service over competition. By not doing that you are not marketing. It's as easy as that! The key is finding the right method and defining the right message to use to educate and influence your consumers.
Do not make the same mistake many companies make misinterpreting the difference with marketing and sales. Marketing is everything the consumer faces when it comes to your business. It all starts with advertising to whats going on out there on the market, to the customer service received, with the follow up service that you provide. It's about marketing and creating the final decision with the consumer to buy from you and/or repeat business.
The activities of marketing are also often confused with advertising and sales, but it is important to realize that there is a difference between all three.

The sales process is all built around everything that you do to close the sale and get a signed agreement or contract. Both are necessities to the success of a business. Combining the two together is a recipe for business growth.
Your marketing efforts will consist of the marketing strategy you use to reach and persuade your prospects that you are the company for them. It's the message that prepares the prospect for the sales. It consists of advertising, brand marketing,public relations, viral marketing, and direct mail.
The sales process consists of interpersonal interaction. Calling your lead and finding out what exactly is their problem and then offer a solution. It's anything that engages you with the prospect or customer on a personal level rather than at a distance.

So when you look at it the goal of marketing is to generate interest in the product and create leads or prospects.
When it comes to marketing and sales the sales is the main activity would be converting prospects to actual paying customers. Sales involves one on one interaction by phone or skype or whatever method your using so as to find out what the prospects problem is before you offer a solution for your prospect to review.
