The Secret Mentor
A mentor is a wise and trusted friend, counselor or teacher and is someone who helps foster the development of another individual or individuals. So what is a secret mentor? Well, keep reading.
Prior to the internet, in order to mentor someone or be mentored by someone there had to be direct contact, whether it be in person or on the phone. Also during this time people’s lives, even those of public figures, were much more private than they are today.
Now with so many people online sharing on social networking sites everything has become much more transparent. Our thoughts, favorite quotes, books, movies, our hobbies and interests, associations, photos of ourselves and family are visible to our entire networks and sometimes just about anyone else.
Because of this exposure, we all have the massive power to be an influence on everyone else around us. What type of influence you are depends on your behavior and actions.
One remark posted on someone’s facebook wall, one blog post, one photo, one quote tweeted all have the potential to influence another person or possibly even several people. Because of this, you may be responsible for moving others in to action, for provoking new thoughts or ideas, for others adopting similar philosophies or inspiring them to do great things in their lives, all without ever even knowing it. This is the secret mentor.
The secret mentor is the individual who understands the power they possess and wield it responsibly. The secret mentor is a leader and has already made the decision that they are the only one who controls their future. The secret mentor’s goal is, of course, to provide value, be helpful and assist others, but it is much like donating money. You know the cause but not necessarily the name or names of the individuals receiving your actual dollars.
So who are my secret mentors? Ray Higdon, Mike Dillard, Brian Fanale, Norbert Orlewicz, Jeff Hoffman, Mark Wieser, Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Robert Allen, Dave Lindahl, Preston Ely, Donald Trump and Dr. Stephen Covey just to name a few. Every one of these individuals are incredibly successful.
Does this mean you have to be successful to be a secret mentor? It depends on your definition of success. If you haven’t read my blog post, “Success Is” go read it to get my definition. You will understand why my answer is yes. Keep in mind, success doesn’t carry a dollar value. You can make minimum wage and be successful because success is a way of life and an attitude not limited by a tax bracket.
So with this in mind and following in the footsteps of my secret mentors I venture through my day with a positive mental attitude, I am always deliberate in my steps, right with my intentions and never proceed without careful forethought.
I aim to push people up, inspire others to not fear their potential and help others dream a bigger dream even though others may have made them feel that it was unrealistic. I am a believer, dreamer, striver and achiever. This is what I wish to convey in my actions, my thoughts, my quotes, my tweets and my posts. Because you never know, I might just be a secret mentor.
Are you a secret mentor?
