Well, Michelle!
That is a good question. Mike Dillard wrote in his newsletter about that exact topic recently. Most people quit because the are in the hole 6 grand (not thought of as an investment) and can't justify putting more money into there business when their family has got to eat, live and get by. They want something more than pay check to pay check, but not willing to give it awhile to come their way by work and persistance.
Also, alot of new people are sign up and shipped out with no gear or crew (no tools to be successful)!
Mike Dillard says in his letter, "If attaining your goal, whether it be to pay off your credit cards, buy a house, save for retirement, or fire your boss, is not a core desire, and not attached to your networking business, you will not succeed. Period."
Mike also says, "So how can you tell if your prospect is going to succeed or fail from the very first phone call?
Easy...
Ask them this question: "So which books are you currently reading on self-development and marketing?"
Anyone who is TRULY serious about being a successful entrepreneur will be able to name at least one book they are reading right now.
Those who can't, are just kidding themselves."
To me it all comes down to how badly they want the succeed in their business. What is their Why and how badly do they want it!
All I know is that I personally started my business under someone who really was sort of negative about things and was burnt out already from working the business. He helped alittle but that was it. I did not care though. I took it upon myself to find out everything in network marketing that I needed to find out and continue to learn and grow. It all depends on the person.

Not Quitting but Definitely Lost
I know those of us in network marketing go through what I call “the big doubt.†I’m not referring to doubts about our company, products or services. I’m talking about self-doubt: can I really do this?
So far I have had zero online sales.
I haven’t been that business that long. I started learning about how to put up my website April 14. This is the first online business model I have attempted. Maybe I’m doing everything I could do and it just takes time.
The point is: I’ve chosen a business model that I know nothing about. I believed I could learn as I went and master it. Every time I get through one step, it turns out I have to learn two or three more. So I really don’t develop complete understanding and confidence in anything I’ve done.
These are the steps I have taken.
1. I bought a domain name and created a blog using Google’s free tools. I think the tool is blogger and the host is blogspot. I don’t know.
After a couple of weeks the page content started to migrate. Then the whole blog disappeared.
2. I created a 62-page content driven website using Site Build It (SBI). This seemed perfect at the time because I didn’t know the first thing about html. The website creation tools “grade†each page. There is always something about each of my pages the SBI tools don’t like. Sometimes I can figure out how to fix the problems, sometimes I can’t. I added various feeds to it.
In June, my daily average of visitors was 18, up from 12 in May.
3. I joined MySpace. The site looks horrible. I made mistakes by talking about my business on it. People on MySpace want to talk about their business. Eventually, I will go back and change the descriptions, but I have spent my time moving ahead—searching for results.
4. I invested time writing articles to ezines. I have joined numerous social sites and blogs to create links to my website. I belong to Yahoo Answer.
5. I have NOT submitted to DMOZ because I can’t figure out what category my site should be in, but I have registered at other free directories. I stopped when I started getting telephone calls to my home. Directories demand submitting a telephone number. I don’t want mine published so that I am hounded in my home.
6. I have created two information products. One is free, the other costs a dollar. The first is really support dialog for one of my services—it is very well researched. The second is a 15-page guide that includes everything an ecommerce owner would need to know to create a free press release, landing page, etc. I sell it for a dollar. It also captures email information so I can reach that purchaser later, when I finish my next product.
7. I went on Craig’s list. I searched for people looking for part-time opportunities. I responded to five posters. I heard from three. Not one of them followed the directions in my email—which was to respond with a phone number, best two days of the week to reach them, and the time of day.
8. Oh! And I created another blog! I used Google again. This time I did not purchase a domain name. Perhaps that is why I cannot find it except by logging into my blogger account. I had thought that with my rss feeds and other social bookmarks I have signed up for I might be able to spread content for free. But since I can't get to it through an engine search I cannot do it.
9. Among my other social sites, I created a Ning community to discuss with other online network marketers on my team the strategies that work and don’t work.
10. I created a free ezine for my team.
Finally, I still have a strong belief that I can make the network marketing, that it is my own ignorance that has prevented me from marketing my opportunity and services online.
The truth is I don’t know how any of this technical stuff works. Occasionally I’ll find updates to sites I’ve signed up for in one of my email boxes. Occasionally I’ll stumble upon my own Google page that I set up, but don’t know how to access on purpose. I notice several rss feed updates there.
I have all kinds of off-line experience that should translate well to the internet. I’m a professional writer. I know how to research and weigh information. I have organized festivals and art shows for up to 16,000 people.
I feel that the past two and a half months have not been wasted. I have certainly learned new skills, but these skills have yet to produce a desired outcome. I need to integrate the skills I brought with me to the internet and combine them in some way that will achieve my desired outcome: and that is to be a successful network marketer.
help is on the way
Elaine call me, 815-263-3597, i can help. Just did a call on why so many people quit in MLM. Hi Billy Ann. Great topic, too long for me to offer my opinion and experience. Very brief highlights:
1. Average person buys into hope rather than business.
2. Humans have a hard time taking responsibility for success and failure.
3. People fear success.
4. No belief within themselves
5. Don't have a strong emotional end in mind.
6. MOST SHOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN INVOLVED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
7. We are use to putting in 40 hours a week so we expect pay for 40 hours when in multi level marketing, the money comes later. It starts off with pennies per hour, dollars per hour and then when duplication and leverage actually occurs, the money increases as the time you put in decreases. NO PATIENCE for most!!!!!!
8. Lack of vision & discipline.
THE LISTS CAN GO ON AND ON AND ON!!!!!!!
Many are joining but not wanting to talk to people. I love Mike Dillards training and info tremendously, however, he is also selling his programs and i disagree with not talking to famly and friends if you truly believe that the product and service you are promoting works, why wouldn't you tell those you care about. But everyone wants to make money without talking to anyone. Well, yes, it can happen but there is alot more than just signing someone up or getting a sale, you need a complete system that is proven that also can have flexibility to cater to individuals perosnalities. Great topic!
They have no stomach!
YES! YES! YES!
