Kicking the habit

One of the most popular expressions in mlm language is tyre kickers. It's an expression that drips with contempt.

It means in essence people who spend your time and money looking at your opportunity, but at the end of the day don't join your network.

So in order to come to terms with the fact that someone had the temerity not to join us, we label them tyre kickers or even worse. That way we deal with rejection.

Here's a story:

A couple of months ago a prospect agreed to join my business, I travelled many miles to see him. I booked a hotel and stayed overnight for our meeting.

I was excited. This guy was really good, ticked all the boxes.

I gave him one of my best presentations, but I could see he wasn't quite with it. At the end he said, "Look I really need to think about this, I've met someone else who does something like this and I want to think about it."

I felt a little surge of anger swell within me, but I contained it easily. I had been here before.

In olden days, I would have stared at him, and just said fine and got out of that room as quickly as possible, possibly telling how p-xxxx-d off I was at him letting me down this way, wasting my money and more importantly my time.

Instead I said: "Good thinking, if you were to come into my business, I don't want you having any regrets, please consider your choice carefully and only join me if you really, really want to. Thanks for your honesty."

I then spent some time with him over a coffeee and discovered he was in a bad place. His mother was dying and he was about to lose his job. I told him if I could ever be of any help in the future get in touch, regardless of what network he joined.

A few weeks later he phoned me and said he wanted to get started, send the form. He's now one of my very best networkers.

The lesson is never dis your prospects, they have a perfect right not to join your business, indeed you should be thankful for whatever decision they make.

Keep an open heart and good will flow through it.
