The 4 Elements to Mastering Influence

Mastering Influence is key to becoming a successful professional or a valuable human-being. To have influence is something we should all master. How much do you know about each one of the following skills? And how many would you place within your forte?

1. Build Rapport. In order to master influence, you must learn how to build rapport. This cannot be emphasized enough. When building rapport with someone, you are creating an emotional connection with them. No matter what medium you are using, online or offline communication, they need to know they you feel what they feel. Find a mutual interest, let them know that you are like them. Let them feel that you have their interest in mind by giving value, be genuine about it. This allows you to build trust.
2. Know your market. Know who you are speaking to by either speaking their language, connect with them, research them or by simply becoming them. Through hands-on experience, you are able to achieve more influence. Gain direct experience with their pain, struggles or aspirations.
3. Ask questions and listen. The skill of asking questions is an amazing tool when dealing with people. In general, people have a need to be heard and find it very difficult to listen. So, be sure to listen to what your prospect is saying by speaking less and asking more questions. This will allow you to dig in deeper into their pain and their struggles to find a way to provide them with a solution and become more valuable to them. The two main motivators for our actions are either a) to reduce pain or b) to increase pleasure. The latter is the most prevalent condition.
4. Congruency and this is my favorite. To master influence, you need to be authentic and everything about you is in line with what you are doing. Be sure to be present-your voice, tone, body language and energy must all feel 110% with what you are doing or saying. Your prospect must feel confident and absolutely certain about the choices they are making with you so you need to believe in YOU 110%.
