Your Eulogy or Your Speech

A few years ago, I attend a wealth creation seminar, and there was this bloke on stage talking about goals. He went on to say how to set goals and achieve them, and also how to find out what you truly want in life.

Now I won’t go into all the nitty gritty details but basically in a nutshell, what he told us was that the best way to do this is to write your own eulogy. The message he wanted to get across was that if you write your own eulogy you are giving the congregation at the church a snapshot of all your achievements, your highs and lows plus all your accomplishments.

Then everyone can say what a fantastic contribution he made to society. Now I don’t want to sound sarcastic in anyway, but honestly how many people do you think would take the time to write their-own eulogy? After all what they say about you at the service, does it really matter? Well to some people it does – but for you it doesn’t matter because you are dead anyway.

However to be fair to this guy I decided that I should at least give this a try. Within the first ten minutes I knew I was up for a challenge. I had a blank sheet of paper, nothing written on it and feeling rather depressed.

OMG this is to close to death, I will leave it to someone else when that day arrives. Yea you can call me a chicken, but the truth of the matter is that I would probably end up re-hashing my life, and slipping in the little white lie here and there, to make me sound like I was cream of the crop human being on this planet.

For me personally writing my own eulogy, I felt it was too close to death. I’m not ready yet. I have got too much to do. With that said I delved a little bit deeper to find an alternative. Whatever it was, it had to make you feel like you were worth something to the world.

The perfect solution…You are going to write a speech to your country!

Now before you get all defensive, and call me names, there is a very logical reason why I want you to do this.

Please let me explain.

The reason that you need to write your speech is because…you are reflecting on your goals and aspirations. Your speech has to be in line with your goals. You are on a mission…and you need to let your country know about it. There are people crying out for your help. You have to get your message out Trust me - Your speech does matter… because people love to watch a great speaker, and to hear a great speech is heart-warming, inspirational, and a spine-tingling experience.

Your speech can make us believe and understand something noticeably better. Your speech will inspire and enlighten us. You will inspire us to fight battles or justice... Make huge sacrifices or overcome the shackles of unfairness and dishonestly, or whatever you are most passionate about.

The message I want to get across to you here is, that it’s important you don’t lose focus on this statement: “Your speech is your eulogy!” By writing your speech you are truly talking yourself up…with passion, with belief, and exciting but truthful vision of the future.

You believe you have already got what you have set out to do. Believe me when you do this you’ll find it is a lot more fun writing a speech than your own eulogy. What do you want people to say about you when you are six foot under pushing up daisies?

Now when you do this exercise something remarkable happens to you inside. Instead of that little spark you had inside of you…it’s now becomes a blow torch. When this happen you will truly get a feeling of anticipation in your gut and you will find all the motivation you need to succeed and become whatever it is you want to be.

Now you probably have had no one say this to you, but I’m going to say it anyway. You are a very special person.

Why?

Because you have got something that I haven’t got. For that reason you need to make the most out of your own qualities. So when you write your speech you need to inspire your audience with a clear vision and challenge. Demonstrate to them the delight and enjoyment they can have. But above all else, show some empathy and understanding by showing them what works.

To do this, you need to step into your future knowing that you have already got what you want, and you are now living the dream. Then work backwards and thread it all together so you can get your storey out there. It’s a bit just like doing a jig-saw puzzle. You look at the cover (the picture) to give you a clue, and then you put all the pieces together. In your case the cover picture is of YOU living the dream.

Do you remember when you were at school, were you were taught that you had to do your best? And hey there is nothing wrong with that. However throughout our school years a lot of us were taught that we had to get “A’s” Most of my years at school were spent in the slow learner’s class because I couldn’t get an A or a B. But we are not at school anymore and today we do things differently.

More than ever it’s extremely essential as you prepare your speech that you “stop trying to get an A”. All you simple have to do is get it going and keep it going. There are plenty of resources out there to help you, but promise me that you will get it going. For some of you this will be a challenge.

However to help you overcome this I want you to read a very famous quote from Zig Ziglar. “You can have everything you want, if you just help enough people get what they want.” And that is exactly what your speech is going to do – help solve their problems.

They are out there right now…waiting for you!
