Article Writing Guide

In this article we will cover how to write blog articles using some simple keyword research and SEO techniques. Posting articles on your blog, in article directories such as EzineArticles.com and on sites like WSNBA will help establish you as an expert and drive traffic to you and your site.  This article writing guide will cover the first of three important areas of writing and posting articles to get them found by Google and prospects.

The first thing you need to do is keyword research. I know - TOTALLY BORING!!! Right? Until you look at it this way: If you can get an article on page one of Google, 80% of searchers click on one of the top 4 or 5 links so:

  • 500 people search for your keyword phrase
  • 400 (80%) people click on your link
  • 120 (30%) opt-in to your newsletter
  • 6 (5%) BUY SOMETHING

Beats the heck out of 0% ain't gonna happen no sir no way - huh?

Google has a great keyword tool at http://www.googlekeywordtool.com Just click on Keyword Tool. (You will want to be logged into your Gmail account, if you have one, when you do this as you will only get 100 results if you're not logged in.) This is a very basic technique for writing articles for SEO purposes.

Let's say you're going to write an article about "<em>women working from home</em>". When you put "women working from home" in the box, you will see that there are over 8000 searches for that for phrase per month. Now there is no way you or I are going to get on page one of Google with that keyword phrase.

We want to sort the results by Global Monthly Searches using the little drop down menu. This will put them in order of how many times per month people search for the phrase listed. You want to go to end of the results. Start out with terms that have less than 500 searches per month.

Since there is no way you're going to get a piece of the 8000 searches - go for the 500. Think of it this way: If 8000 people do a search and you don't come up on page one  - no one is going to find you. But if you can go for one of the 500 people that search, your odds are Much better.

Another way to think of your blog like real estate and your keyword results like dollars -- Lets say you want to sell your house. You want a million dollars for your house - who wouldn't right? But you live in an area where all the houses sell for $100,000. Do you think the realtor (Google) is going to bring visitors to your house? Probably not.

Your website or blog is your real-estate, your house on the web. In order to get people to your house - you can't go for the million dollar keyword, like working from home.   You need to scroll through the results, find keywords that you can write about that WILL bring people to your house.  Let's go through and see how we can get people to your "house" or blog.

By sorting the results by global monthly searches we see that we can use <em>working from home advice, women balancing work and home</em>, or <em>work from home ideas for women</em>.  So you want to take those keyword phrases and use them in your article.

For this article, I could have chosen the keyword <em>article writing</em> which is searched about 74,000 a month.  I know I will never get on page one of Google with that so I looked searched through them and found: <em>how to write blog articles, writing articles for SEO</em> and <em>article writing guide</em>.  Each of these phrases is typed into Google 4-500 times a month or so.  You want to stay under 1000 until you get several articles written and showing up in Google searches.  Later, as you site gains popularity and stuff, you can go for some of the higher phrases.

When writing articles for SEO purposes, i.e. to get ranked on page one of Google and get more traffic to your site, there are a few things you will want to do with your keywords. We will go over those  things in part 2 of the Article Writing Guide.
