‘How to Guide’ on Running Your Internet Business
I have been around the block, so to speak, a few times, and I would like to share with you my impressions of how things should be done by the guru ceo types if they want their company to be successful. Much of the information is comon sense but that type of sense appears to have been lost on a majority of people, Read and enjoy! I hope it it will help someone some where.
So your dream has finally come true. You and all your web buddies have finally put together the ‘end all’, ‘best of the best’ and finally an online business that people can actually promote and make money. You and your web buddies (some who were around when Al Gore invented the Internet) have all this Internet knowledge and marketing experience so what in the world could ever stop this company from being number one. The answer, very sadly to say, is you if you don’t follow the steps below.
The following principles should be your guiding beacon.
1. People want knowledge and they want it explained in the least complicated way
2. Assume your clients ‘know nothing’ and start all explanations and instructions on ‘how to do something’ with the lowest common denominator.
3. Establish clear and concise rules that can easily be followed.
4. Be available to answer questions and resolve problems very quickly. Have an outstanding customer service department.
Training Calls or Conference Calls – The heart of any business and therefore its success is the training that is provided by the company. Training or conference calls is a great way to start if it is done correctly. Also email announcements should precede every training call telling about the nature and scope of the call.
Types of Calls – The following are the types of calls that should be maintained and what each type should include in its content:
Introductory Calls – this call should be 5 days a week (with a Saturday time) and should be less than 30minutes in length. It should be managed by the corporate office and should explain in detail what the program is about and how to join. It should be hosted by both a man and a woman and should be non threatening and very friendly. The listener should be encouraged to contact the person who sent them to this call to get more complete information and understand what that ’sponsor’ will be doing for them to get their business off the ground.
New Member Call - this call is designed to not only welcome the new associate but to get them started in the right direction. It should be hosted by a corporate personality who has the ability to stay on track, dispense information and yet be understanding to the anxieties of the new business owner. The call should be divided into 2 parts as suggested below:
Monday & Wednesday New Member Calls – The content of this call has one and only one purpose – to have the new associate completely understand the back office. Each item in the back office should be reviewed and no detail left out. This should be like a “monkey see monkey do” operation. The presenter should have a screen open and illustrate each operation while those watching can do the same on a minimized screen. Again this would have to be explained on how to do this, as everyone listening is not a computer whiz. Questions could be answered at the end but only about the back office, The key is to stay on TASK!
Tuesday & Thursday New Member Calls – this call should focus on beginning get started tips. This is not a marketing call but rather a “first step” call. The presenter (and it would be great if it could be a man and a woman) should focus on business organization. Topics could include but not be limited to the following:
1. Registering your new business with the correct authorities (you will be making money and therefore you will have tax consequences and this should be explained)
2. Domain names and email accounts
3. Business necessities (i.e. filing methods, business organization, computer solutions etc)
4. Glossary and Definitions of common business and marketing terms
5. Differences of Marketing and Advertising
6. The role of the “sponsor”
7. Beginning steps to market your site
8. The importance of consistency
9. A beginning weekly plan
Marketing Calls – Before I digress about what should be included in this type of call let us clearly understand the purpose of this call. To make it very simple, when the call concludes the listener and or participant should have a solid foundation and plan on how to market their site in a particular area. The area to consider would be items such as: video marketing, article marketing, google and adsense marketing to name a few. Please understand that “How” to do this can be very complicated and must be explained in easy step by step procedures or you will lose your audience. The company that can select a topic, stay on course and have a clear concise plan for implementation will be the winner.
The following are ideas that must be answered for any marketing plan and I will use article writing as an example:
· What will I write about? (saying you can write on anything is not giving sound advice, but is passing the buck)
· How long should the article be?
· Do I include my website in the article?
· Do I have to use special adwords or keywords in the article?
· Now that the article is written, how do post it?
· Where do I post my article?
· Under what category do I post my article?
· Are special downloads needed to post my article?
· What downloads do I need to publish my article?
· How do I download this material?
· What is the best article marketing technique?
· How does a newsletter and article differ?
· Can I post my article on different sites and call it a newsletter?
· After my article is published can I see it?
· How do I get my article to rank high on the search engines?
· How can I track my article ‘reads’or ‘hits”
· How many articles should I write?
As you can see there are quite a few areas to consider when setting up a marketing call on a particular topic. The presenter must stay on topic and organize the lesson in a clear cut logical manner. This is not the time for free lancing and certainly not the time for open discussion. If an open discussion is deemed necessary for whatever reason, then it should be set up as a separate call and called something like “ Article Marketing – Different Ideas on the subject – Open Forum and Discussion”
