You Don't Spend Enough Time On Facebook

When I was getting started in Network Marketing and racing the end of my warm market, my sponsor’s big (wisdom filled) counsel was to “go meet people” and that usually meant heading to the mall.

We would go where the people go, stalking unsuspecting mall shoppers or business section browsers at the Barnes and Noble.

While some Network Marketing teams still teach that stuff, I would offer that there is a new place where the “people go”.  It’s called Facebook.

Check this out from Social Media Examiner:

According to recent findings by market researcher Morpace, U.S. Facebook users are on the site for 1 of every 3 minutes of time spent online.  Users 18 to 34 years old spend the most time on the site per week (8.5 hours out of 22.4 spent online). Users 55 and older spend an average of 4.6 hours per week on Facebook.

Yep, 1/3 of our time online in the U.S. is spent on Facebook and get this: the group who spent the most time on Facebook and online make at least $100,000 annually.

What does that mean to a marketer?

  1. It means that we need to figure out ways to tap into those people. I’m not sure anyone has a good way of doing this with Facebook’s constant changes. (We will dig deep into this topic in the coming days, weeks and months.)
  2. It means that we need to be very careful with how we spend our time on Facebook. Yes, I’m talking to you Farmers, Mafia Honcho’s and Quiz Takers. If you want to build a six-figure income in your spare time, you can’t be using that spare time to plant zucchini in your fake Facebook farm.
  3. It means that we are in a race.  Big companies might move slow but eventually they move and when they do, the playing field will change dramatically.  We need to act now.

Do you have a Facebook marketing strategy? Tell us what’s working for you in the comments...

Awesome Ty...
Thanks for sharing the data.
Now the question will be "How To Use It?"

What can marketers do to take that data and implement it as a process for increasing effectiveness and results in their daily marketing routine?

Diggin your blog by the way. How do you like iBlogPro?
I'm launching a new site using it and so far it seems pretty cool.

Some small semi useful info.

You stated the why we should learn to market on FB. You leave out everything of value. Such as where to start perhaps. Connecting with groups? Targeting industries in running ads, do these people even buy products you might be offering online. Changing peoples buying habits is not easy unless your pockets are deep or your a well known brand.

So ill ask this question. What are you doing to market on FB right now?

Yes Ty be disciplined inside FB

FB is certainly a tricky place for leads.
Especially QUALITY leads.
I have friends that do get leads there
very well and they simply are aware it seems of
exactly what and how to use it.
I'm learning from them.
By observing.
Hell I'll mention their names since
they are leaders in BN.
Franco Gonzalez does it very well.
So does the stricking viking...Diane Hoffman.

Just Being Real and Being Yourself

Ty, I am finding facebook to be a very interesting source of very high quality leads - more than yahoo ppc. And while less that facebook ppc, higher quality.

I just started focusing on facebook as a lead source. It is very different than paid for leads. What's working for me is 1) just being real - not attempting to sell at all and just being real and in communication with the people I make friends with.

What I do is find out what every friend needs and wants from a facebook friend and I just do what I can to be that and do that.

2) I treat facebook like real people not sales prospects - I actually don't go there to sell at all yet, I get pitched day in and day out by so so many guys there - it can get a bit unpleasant. I learn from my reaction to that, what not to do with others.

I just do whatever I can, I extend myself as much as I can to do something to help every single person I meet.

From this I am creating the most fantastic friendships and leads are starting to come out of nowhere. Literally - and they are much better than paid for leads - it's almost like feeling people vacuumed to me!

I just don't care about sales or pitching and am just being me - and working as hard as I can to do something for everyone I meet.

It is starting to work and it is very rewarding at the same time.

Excellent post!

Thank you Ty. Although networking your way to recruiting has it's place, I do most of my networking on FB now and I have to admit it is a whole lot easier and better then wasting time on street-cruiting :)

Thanks for the post.

Go where the people are ...

Hi Ty,

Thanks for this post! FB is definitely where the people are! I'm a "boomer" just getting started with FB ... and already I much prefer hanging out on FB to hanging out in the mall.

I want good interactions and good content. The people are all of us, we want to keep that in mind! So what we want is what they want. They are looking for answers, to a serious need.

Use your time effectively

I know alot of people that waste alot of time on Facebook not really connecting with their niche. I like to share information about current events and share resources with other affiliate marketers. My list of friends on FB has really grown since I started posting information and sharing tips.

To Much Time on Facebook

The stats show the obvious people spend to much time moving pixels around on their computer and not enough time doing business building activities. Ty you are dead on when you say people have to act now on Facebook before the big companies wake up and start to move because facebook is creating an atmosphere for them to strike.

What I have noticed is the clamp down on friend requests and now when your on your home page if you look to the right hand side of your screen facebook used to "suggest" friends. This is no longer true it now says "People You May Know"

Facebook also has a mission statement and I'll paraphrase, Facebook is for people to stay connected to friends, coworkers, and classmates.

Bottomline is most people when they do make friends with "strangers" have no idea what to say because they never stop to learn any communication skills....clicking a button that says "add to Friends" is NOT a skill....

Facebook Stats

These stats, as well as some others I've heard, are quite impressive. It definitely shows that there is some potential there. But tapping into this potential is not quite as easy as it sounds, at least to me. How to build relationships and generate leads without spending all day on Facebook & Twitter, etc., is my biggest challenge. Would love to know more about how to actually accomplish this.

Thanks for an interesting post.

Social Media is Social

Hi Ty,

Great information and perspective. To me social media is like forum marketing. It takes time to develop relationships, so if someone is looking for an instant ROI it's not there. In the corporate marketing world people are advised to do 100 social post to every 1 direct promotion.

I do believe that social media is a good channel to raise awareness but it's not the best channel for converting leads. Search marketing makes more sense to me because people are looking for what you have in real time!

I consider FB and Twitter more of a back channel and search marketing/paid as the front channel. Any good marketer will have both!

Best 'face' forward

Great information! I'd say those stats are true too, based on my own experience on Facebook.

I tell everyone: Facebook is your new warm market, once you learn the 'secret': People hate to be sold, but they love to buy... from someone they like.

If anyone is a newbie with facebook and would like some help on how to approach people, build a relationship etc., I've learned a lot from the training offered by Max Steingart.

Nurturing your Facebook friends to a six figure income

Your absolutely right Ty, the amount of people playing with Facebook is astounding.

I'm not sure what is, but most network marketers feel the need to
pitch, pitch, pitch. I guess it has something to do with the law
of averages, pitch 100 people and get 1 bite. This is old school mentality, where as I teach my group to avoid talking business until after the 3rd or 4th connection. It's important to establish rapport, trust and even a solid foundation of friendship.

Many complain that they don't have time to chat and create a bond with other people, so what's going to happen when they sponsor them? They will be so busy trying to recruit the next one, that they will never truly have the time to help develop the first rep and so continues the endless cycle of turnover and failure.

If you want to succeed at Facebook Marketing, you need to give first to others before expecting something in return.

@Richard Kaulfers - Wow.

So who tinkled in your Cheerios this morning?

This blog post is the beginning of the conversation about why it is important to utilize Facebook, not the entire training on how to use Facebook.

The conversation and a massive amount of value can be found on my blog.

I would say, however that a "holier than thou" attitude is NOT the best way to connect in general (or on Facebook for that matter).

Thanks for the interesting stats Ty! Facebook is absolutely a way to build business, as I have recruited Distributors as well as gotten many new clients via the use of relationship building on FB. And the cost? That's the best part: FREE!

Facebook leads...

I love Facebook and the leads I get are great although they are few and far between. Not altogether certain that I get enough ROI time wise. Thankfully Twitter is linked so I don't have to spend time updating there.
What I can't stand is when I get a message from someone I don't know telling me that they really want to help me and are honoured to know me. Sometimes the language is a tad unreal to say the least.
Keep it real is my motto on social networks.

Josephine Payge — Mon, 09/13/2010 - 2:09pm

Facebook Connections

Great post Ty - I enjoy Facebook as a regular daily way of communicating. I've had great results marketing my own products to people based on their needs and I've learned not to pitch anyone in my circles unless they are begging to find out what I'm so excited about. The important thing is to really focus in on relationship building and personal branding. The leads take care of themselves.

Theresa Key — Mon, 09/13/2010 - 4:14pm

that works for me

Thanks Ty, good post, and here is how it works for me:
I set up a DMO, and spend 2h30 to 3 hours daily on Facebook, this way:
- saying no to all the farmville and mafias and others games requests
- posting valuable and beautiful things on my wall
- selecting very carefully my friends to accept, and searching quality ones,
-using IM to talk to 10 people at least
- posting comments and likes on friends'walls.
- following the excellent video courses of Max Steingart "endless free leads 4 ever" that I now sell also as an affiliate on my blog.
That way I get the quality of free leads that I want, and use attraction marketing, but it's not a numbers. So I use others methods as well. Social media use is providing very good quality connections, but not quantity. ( to me, and I've enough with quality friends, to do good in my bus).

They make at least $100,000 annually?

Hi Ty, great subject to get the conversation started.

You stated:
"The group who spent the most time on Facebook and online make at least $100,000 annually."

Could this be because they are the most active in building their businesses?

Could it be that they are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their target, even if it is new and has never been done before?

I like FB for keeping up on friendships and making new ones. That was what is was intended to be used for in the first place and so that is why I use it today.

I read what others say there more than I write something myself. Then, when I see a need I know I can fill, I ask for more information to see if that person wants to talk more about it. If so, I listen to them with more questions and then suggest a solution they may want to check out for themselves.

I heard that "MySpace" was replaced by FaceBook because MySpace became a place that most sales people destroyed. Most of the people I knew that used MySpace are no longer using it and love FB in it's place.

Too bad old school marketing taught that sales is a "numbers game." They should have taught that it is a people's network and that if you treat people as people instead of numbers, you will succeed.

By the way Ty, I took your Blog training and then put up a new blog at www.TheInternetSuccessPlan.com In just one month, it has a Google rank of 22 out of 9,790,000 other Web sites for the term "The Internet Success Plan"

Thanks a million!

What Morspace doesn't say

... is that a majority of the 18-34 year olds are actually doing up their farms or killing people on fb.

Come to think of it, that might be a good way to actually connect with them before taking them into a business frame of mind. Just thinking aloud.

For me, groups work. And happy, neutral teachings.

FB Marketing or Just a Social Network?

I agree that using FB is one of our most used tools for marketing. I never did understand how people use it as a time waster for farming, games, etc...just not my cup of tea, I guess. I checked out Daniel's blogpost and he had some good content on the subject.
There have been alot of changes to FB and abusers have been ousted, so we need to "handle with care". I think Al Baker has the right "take" on this. It seems when you loose the agenda, and don't make it about yourself, success automatically follows.
Good discussion, Ty it certainly is something that most of us need to reflect on.
