Crazy Marketing Idea
My wife and I took a little trip out to Arcadia Oklahoma this evening to eat at a little resturaunt and gas station called POPS. This little gas station sits right off of Route 66 outside of Oklahoma City. We had heard from several people that the food was pretty good and the environment was different so we decided to drive out there and check it out to see what all of the buzz was about.
We pulled into the gas station and the parking lot was jam packed with cars. Keep in mind that the gas station itself is probably only 5000 square feet, so it is a little bigger than the normal gas station and convenient store. the parking lot however was the size of a Wal Mart parking lot and it was jam packed with cars and people.
The moral of the story is that there was nothing special about the food or the place itself except that it has a theme and it was different. There were bottles of different kinds of pop from all over the world with a pretty high mark up. People were lined up at the little cafe and the line went out the door for people waiting to get in and look over the selection of soda pops.
Environment and perceived value have everything to do with marketing a product successfully and Pops is a classic example of this. Some guy had an idea and built the parking lot and because he built it with the expectation of getting thousands of visitors that is exactly what he got. Next time we go I will be taking my video camera so you can see how much money a little bit of creativity can put in your pocket.
