About Tomboy Tools
Tomboy Tools was founded in 2000 in Denver, Colorado by Janet Rickstrew and Mary Tatum, who love do-it-yourself projects and wanted to help other women learn how to do practical jobs around the house with high-quality tools, and also to provide people with an opportunity to make a living from home selling the company’s tools. The company’s original product line has since expanded to include garden tools, auto tools, paint tools and other practical tools.
Originally the company sold directly over the internet, storing stock in a 1,000 square foot warehouse . By 2002, the Tool Party was launched, where distributors could go to host’s houses to show women how the products work and sell them. Today the company operates a 13,000 square foot warehouse.
The company motto is ‘learn today, teach tomorrow, build forever,’ meaning that women can learn to empower themselves today, help other women to do the same tomorrow, and build on the foundations set by women in the past by empowering future generations of women. Tomboy Tools was named as one of the Top 100 Companies to Watch by Entrepreneur Magazine.
Those interested in joining Tomboy Tools can find more information on the website, as can those who are interested in hosting a party. Commissions on sales are typical, and hosts receive benefits for hosting a party. The company also offers lessons on how to do things such as basic plumbing.
The company operates in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and is a member of the Direct Selling Association and the Direct Selling Women’s Association.
Tomboy Tools Products
The company’s product line is a feminized – but high-quality – line of tools that are traditionally seen as being masculine.
Pink Tomboy Traveler
This kit carries a wide variety of tools, including hammers, measuring tape, screwdrivers, pliers and so on, in a small, compact space. The company suggests that this is one of their most popular products because the color of the kit means husbands will not disturb it to ‘borrow’ tools.
Hammer with Magnetic Head
The company states that the hammer is a lightweight at 13 ounces, and the magnetized nail groove holds and starts a nail single handed. The hammer also has a rubber grip for additional support.
Pink Digital Tire Gauge
This tool can be used to check the PSI (pounds per square inch) of a tire, and is accurate up to 150 PSI.
