Facebook FanPage Changes

Postby Lu Pupko on Tue Aug 10, 2010 6:40 pm

Hello, everyone. We all know that facebook is a great place to build business.
I opened my fan page and today when I logged in I found a message on the top of my page.
Can anybody explain what changes should I do before August 23.

I copied a message:
To make your Page easier to browse, we’re simplifying a couple things: 1. Boxes are going away (including the Boxes tab); 2. All custom tabs will be narrower (520 pixels). This is your chance to preview your Page and make edits as needed before the new layout goes public on August 23. Read full announcement

Hi

Yes, there are saying that you need to change your the size of your layout if it's wider than 520 pixels wide. Also, to get all info tabs, box tabs, removed and instead use Facebook Application such as Static FBML to create your pages/Tabs.

So to be clear...

1. It is better to create your facebook fan page layout, the background, in these dimensions..

520 wide pixels.

Before, the maximum width size for Facebook fan page, if you're creating background designs etc is 760px.

(check your links on your blog where you talk about your article on why design your facebook fan page. It seems your links are broken) I wanted to check and see the size of your facebook fan page but couldn't.

2. Your tabs, which are those menus on your facebook fan page will be dissappearing soon.

Especially the ones we call Boxs, infos. You can see in many personal facebook fan pages, of people putting optin forms, videos on the side of the profile page.

Well, for facebook fan page, these will dissappear.

So you need to start thinking fast, as my clients are. NOW, they listening LOL. I mentioned this many months ago, and now they too got message from Facebook. :)

You need to create your own tabs using:

A) Image
Facebook Applications called Static FBML. In doing so, this will create it's own Tab. It will also create a box to paste code in there.

B) Do that now for anything you wish to create on your facebook fan page. Use Facebook application static FBML.

Here's some more info..

Application Tabs will be the only way to integrate applications into profiles and Pages. Application tabs will shrink from 760 pixels wide (today) to 520* pixels wide to accommodate a slightly revised design. Boxes, info sections, and the Boxes tab will be removed in the near future.

So it's important to make these changes now before the transition happens.

Where will users' profile boxes go?
Profile boxes will not exist in the near future.

Application tabs will be the only way developers can integrate into the profile.
If integrations on the profile are an important part of your application, we encourage you to focus development and transition to application tabs.

Please look at this link and look at the top first paragraph:
http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/ind ... ap_Profile

Added Advise and Suggestions:
I would suggest, to create your own facebook fan page, which have links in them. Links which will take to different pages.

Like a website - your own Navigation bar in the design using CSS, like this...

You will need to know CSS and some basics and maybe intermediate facebook markup language.

If you check on BN for Dean McNamara. You can see his Facebook Fan page which we designed. You'll see menu designed so he doesn't rely on the Facebook tabs.

We saw it coming, which is why the changes were made in beginning to his fan page. Loved doing it. Great guy to work with too. :D

Ouch, now to have a fan page you should have a high tech skills.....

I like simple stuff to teach people like me to use something that easy to create and duplicate ....

look like I need to dig dipper :)

Adam, thank you for your time to explain all this and show examples. I think it going to be helpful to other, who interested to upgrade their fan pages. I also checked my blog and seems my links work to me...
but I will appreciate if you will check my page: http://facebook.com/workwithlu

For some reason, which I'll figure out soon enough, is when I click on the link you just gave, it takes me to my own facebook personal profile.

I'll see if it's my cookies and come back. I have hunch which I'll check in a bit.

Not saying it doesn't work Lu. Jus trying to figure out why it doesn't direct me to yours and instead directs me to my facebook profile. :)

EDIT. I have a feeling Lu, you copied your facebook fan page link when...you was logged on. Which is why it will take you to it but not me. That's just a hunch because I sent it to someone else and it directed them to their own Facebook personal profile.

DEAN...is the Lu's link for a Facebook Fan Page goes to her facebook fan page. Good to see if it's my computer or the link.

I have sent to someone else, they've replied same..

It takes me straight to my facebook profile. Maybe she copied link while being logged into her facebook fan page. Needs to log out and then take the link. Might work.

Well, if you want more than background with optin form, which I'm seeing everywhere and seperate from crowd, then yes. Upgrade :D

Especially what will be coming in future.

Duplication I feel for me, personally, is another word for 'not bothering to invest and learn a skill, and get with it." But that's just me. I like stretching people.

But I do understand, that it can be time consuming, needs more knowledge and there's still a lot of people in beginning stage. But then again, they can hire people to do it.

Which I do for most of things I do except facebook fan pages as I enjoy doing them.

As time moves on, Facebook will also, which means knowledge on CSS and Facebook Markup language. They may even clamp down on capture pages.

However, there'll always be tools out there anyway for the happy, click, click and done. I'm seeing them pop up here and there.
