I'm following all the rules and losing to junk!

Postby Andrew Anderson on Wed Oct 07, 2009 1:50 pm

I've been trying to perfect a splash page for use in some Traffic Exchanges. One of them has a list of the best converting pages. I took a look and expected some neat tidy by the book with great copy splash pages. What I found was a list of banners and a horribly unattractive site with no cohesion...WTF? How does a list of banners get a 20% conversion rate when my clean by the book page (http://www.clickstart.50webs.com/squeeze.html doesn't even get one sign up?

Am I missing something?

Nobody ever stood out from the crowd by
following all the rules.

For the love of all things dear, when will everyone realize that traffic exchanges are the biggest waste of time ever... Offer me $1,000,000 cash, and I still wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole.

How do you know the page full of banners is converting so well?

You need 1000's of hits from a TE before you're ever likely to get a sign up. Folks aren't looking to sign up or buy anything. They are doing the exact same thing as you - trying to earn enough credits so they can show off their splash page to everyone else.

IF your page happens to catch their eye in between flitting from one site to the next, and IF it grabs their attention long enough to make them actually look at it, then you MAY get a signup.

At the moment, your page isn't bright and shiny enough to grab the attention of anyone.

Funnily enough, I haven't been to a TE in soooooooo long, yet I've had a number of visits to my blog lately from Traffic Swarm. Can only imagine, the url must still be in there somewhere from the days when it was a capture page for the Insider Report, lol.
Okay, I finally opened up.

Check out how I can help you.

Well, I had 1 semi-sign up after 1 day of this page (they didn't confirm) I know traffic exchanges mostly suck, but the idea is you have to capture attention in about 1 second, which some pages have done for me (I've signed up for a few). They work, just not well. My philosophy is that its free and people still do it so its gotta work, not well, but it works. I'm not looking to build a list of 30000 in 2 days, but I feel a few sign ups a week wouldn't be crazy. TE's are usually full of newbies which are my prime market right now, so I feel like I'd be stupid not to go there. I used a page that I myself signed up to as a template, which has been a recommended strategy in just about every book I've read. I admit the graphic blows, that's getting worked on as we speak. I have no idea what's going on with my opt-in box because its above the fold on my browser and my web design program.

Mike, you are my god. But I laugh because with all my surfing about 3% of the ads I see are for your videos. So someone isn't listening to you.

Anyway thanks for all the input. Now if I could just get IE to not recognize every site as a virus (windows...2 days of having it and its full of virus's and junk).

Those banners might have a lot of back links that are bringing traffic to that page. There is a whole art to putting together all the right stuff to make the page convert and it involves links, tags, metatags and all sorts of other fun stuff.

Work to build a list to then work with to convert. Best way to get that list is to offer something for free in exchange for their information.

The only traffic exchange that I use is Trafficswarm. I only get about 1 or 2 leads a week from it. Not a lot, but I do not spend much time with it.

You said your market were newbies. When I joined my first company, the first marketing strategy I used online was Craigslist and other online classifieds. I know a lot of newbies will do this. You will start receiving less traffic, but you will get more return by using online classifieds.

My favorite classifieds right now is Backpage. I did buy a autoposter for Backpage (BP Sender), but they are cheap (less than $30). Within one hour I can have ads in over 200 cities on backpage, I do this everyday. I have had much more success using Backpage than Trafficswarm.

Just my opinion here: I turned off the confirm option on my autoresponder. Most will not confirm the e-mail, because they have no idea who you are. In addition, many of these confirm messages go to their junk box. So they never see it. You are making someone go through an extra hoop to get on your mailing list. They can unsubscribe if they do not want to receive my autoresponder messages.

Once you are getting 25-50 leads a day, then you can start using the confirm if you wish. It may help you filter out some of the people who are not serious.

Agree on the above posts. People who use traffic exchanges do it because it is free.

Do you even want prospects who are not willing to invest in their business? And they are only doing it to promote their opportunity, they do not care about yours.

Also, no offense but your opt in page is not that attractive. First thing I noticed is there are words mis spelled. Granted I make a ton of typos myself in blog and forum post etc, but this is the face of your business here.

Another thing about your opt in page, why should I sign up? I don't see any carrots dangling that make me say " I have to see what this is ".

It's kind of ironic that the book and promise is about making effective squeeze pages. If that is the book you used to create yours....

You can keep the book.

So I went through my notes from almost a year ago from a copywriting book. Kicked out a new headline. I think its pretty good now. Though I'm a newbie (after 4 years of doing this on and off  ) and using an outdated book so I'd like some more feedback if possible. http://www.clickstart.50webs.com/squeeze.html

Fire away. I'm working on this one till its perfect....well...maybe not perfect but, it until its able to get a sign up or 2 every once in a while lol.
