Content or proper grammar and spelling?

Postby Chris Tryon on Mon Aug 24, 2009 5:29 pm

I have a pet-peeve. I know that on-line marketing is all about CONTENT. However, what good is content without proper spelling and grammar? For me, those who are not conscientious about their spelling and grammar, are not very credible to me. I have a hard time believing that those individuals are actually making money with their MLM. What do you think? Does spelling and grammar matter to you? Or is it really about the content?

I believe that you are completely right!

All of your content posts should be well written and have a very concise point. So often I stumble onto poorly written blogs and websites that do not say "I'm a Leader follow me" but rather they say to me "I have no money and no understanding of what I'm doing, just trying to follow the leader, because that is what I was told to do"

Well written or not people need to stop worrying about following anyone to make money online. They need to be genuine, authentic, and THEMSELVES that is the only way they will truly be successful in my opinion.

Thus my ultimate point is that Grammar/spelling/content mean squat if you are only a copy cat.

It's funny- when I was a kid spelling bored me no end. I would cram and pass the tests- but never learned to spell. Once I got into business, after a dozen years as a rock bass player, there was spell check.

I had the same issue with typing class. I learned QWERT. That didn't seem relevant- so I didn't learn to type well.

Now I have to admit that I have to really try to get it right. My fingers seem to want to hit extra keys every now and then. My mind likes to reverse letters every now and then. And I think far faster that I type.

So I have the burden of having to reread what I write before it's published. Otherwise I risk looking like an idiot. But look back at history. Look how many people have chosen to follow a fool!

My point- you can be successful in spite of your flaws- but it makes sense to eliminate as many as you can. You never know if the person you are wanting to recruit is a spelling and grammar fanatic!

I really, dislike reading content that has just butchered the English language, but if I previously have found someone, and I know they are from another country or background, and they have earned respect from me I don't mind at all.

Well said, Phil. We have a lot in common. I think faster than I type. I am FOREVER re-reading everything I type and checking it for errors before I hit the "print button.'' It doesn't help that I am mildly dyslexic as well. For those of you that would like something fun to read on the subject of grammar, (my oldest son, is a GRAMMAR FANATIC, thanks to a certain 9th grade English teacher), I highly recommend a book titled, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss. It will keep you laughing and you will definitely develop a better understanding of grammar by the time you finish reading it. Have fun!

I'm glad you brought this up Chris;

Content is the main objective of course, but using good grammar and spelling is a matter of courtesy. If English is not ones native tongue then I admire him/her for writing in ESL. When I see someone struggling to write in a language that is not their native tongue, I feel empathy for them and commend them for their ongoing efforts.

I lived in Switzerland because German was my minor in college. Some of the Swiss people I met spoke four languages-English, German, French, and Italian. To me that's impressive!

However, if a person is writing in English as their native language, there is little excuse for bad grammar and spelling with the "Spell Check" and editing capabilities these editors afford us with our computers. I always take time to re-read my articles or posts before publishing them.

It comes down to "COURTESY" There's no reason why most of us can't take an extra 2 or 3 minutes to review our drafts before releasing them to our friends and readers.

The other thing that I find a bit aggravating is when a person writes a protracted 2 thousand word post and presents it in one big block of characters. It's too easy to break it up into paragraphs as a courtesy to readers. Paragraph arrangement makes it easier to read and more interesting.

I am not trying to be snooty, I'm simply talking about courtesy.

Cheers;

Gary

Cntenst isKng . Bt fI cnt' undrstand....... <-----lame.

Content is king. But if I can't understand the content because the page is too hard to read, then there is little interest generated inside of me to care about the content.

=) nuff said.

Well, I vote mostly for content. Yes, spelling and typo's can throw off a reader especially if the writing is long but to judge character for this is too harsh. I have committed many mistakes in some posts that have made me cringe, so I know what you are commenting on. For some reason my eye did not catch the extra letter, the omitted word, and sometimes the message was written in the wee hours of the morning (like now) too punder over. I know this is no excuse for the writing purist but there it is.
I know what readers have to go on is how a writer conveys their message. Impressions are important but in my experience if you look too closely at anything you are bound to find fault. I care about understanding the message and facts.

Oh Chris do not get me going on this subject!
That's one of my pet peeves also.
The way many people spell and I thought it was just guys who have a hard time spelling.
I try my best to spell correctly but there are times when I'm typing to quickly and I'll either not catch the misspelled word or I'm too lazy to do anything about it. But not often! Hehe

I heard somewhere that people are using computer lingo to get their message across because there are some places where you are limited to how many characters you can use such as Twitter. I guess that's fine but the spelling and grammar on many people, I feel should be corrected.

Most of the time I use my MS Word to correct myself.
There's probably other programs I can use, but I'm used to this one.
I know MS Word isn't the greatest to use but I like it.

Content and grammar and spelling all get categorized the same for me, extremely important. There is no reason at all why you can't take an extra 3 or 4 minutes to reread what you've written before publication. If you don't have the time, you can always save it and publish when you do have the time.
Your submission is often the first impression someone receives about you and if you can't take the time to run a spell check or check for misplaced capital letters then I question your whole attention to detail. Are details important as a business owner? I would vote a resounding "yes".
Off on a slightly different tangent, content on a video is more important than if you can string a grammarically correct sentence together. I have quit watching videos unless someone recommends it. I don't know how many hours I have wasted watching videos that didn't have content that justified taking the time to watch it.
Unfortunately, this topic is a great one but the ones who need to read it - won't !
