Don't do this without this. What is it?

Postby Chris Tryon on Fri Jul 16, 2010 10:42 am

I am going to start a controversial subject for those who are familiar with internet marketing.

I could also write a book titled, "Confessions of a tire-kicker. How to avoid dealing with people like me."
From my personal experience, I don't think that people should post a link to their primary business in their signature line. It is counter productive in my opinion. If you have a link to your primary business, most people are going to google it and research your company without ever contacting you. Odds are that if you have your link going to a landing/splash page that requires them to leave their phone number, most people will just move on, or leave a fake phone number just to get to the information.

My suggestion is this, don't share links with your primary business until someone asks you what business you are in. Don't tell them what it is, get their phone number or business card and then call them back. This way, you can build your relationship with them first and determine if you want to work with them. Once you have determined the answer to this question is yes, then give them the link to your business and make sure that they know that you will be calling them back to answer any questions that they may have. The fortune truly is in the follow-up. ALWAYS give them your phone number so that they can call you back.

Does this advice make sense to you? Please share. I want this to be a learning experience for everyone involved so people can stop wasting their time doing things that do not work.

I don't think you will get much controversy on that topic in this site - mind you, having just checked the unanswered posts, there is definitely someone who doesn't "get it" and needs to read your post!

Welcome to the forum, Nikki. I know that this is becoming my latest pet peeve. People that I know, even on this site will send me a link to their website and not follow up with me. I have found that this practice is wasting their time and mine.

Personally, if I want more information about an opportunity, I am going to research it before I contact you if I find out which company you represent. If I don't know, then I will ask and a relationship will begin.

Everyone is preaching the gospel of "building relationships." They can't do that if they make too much information available for FREE.

Nothing controversial about that at all Chris & I concur wholeheartedly with you!

I use my signature link to give away helpful information in an attempt to build a relationship with whoever is interested in taking a look at it.

My blog is linked to via the small "earth" icon under my picture on the right of my post.

Yes, I also started out linking to my primary business in my sig link, but very soon realised that it WAS a waste of time.

Very good post - it will be interesting to see if anyone argues the point.
