People asking to join an MLM company via the forums

Postby Seb Brantigan on Tue Feb 22, 2011 1:41 pm

To put things bluntly, I don't like the idea of these threads - they only attract lazy networkers who want to pitch their businesses and websites, it takes up admin & moderator's time and does more harm than good.

Yes it's important to get advice about a company, to learn about the products, company background, pay plan etc. however you could privately seek out members on the website, instead of to everyone. I think asking about certain aspects of a company e.g. pay plan would be more effective than just asking people to pitch you (someone will always take it too far).

Here's an example so I can get closer to my thoughts on this:

Mr. X wrote:I live in Japan and have interest in MLM business. I have been in affiliate marketing for several years and have good skills enough to earn full time income.

I studied some MLM companies and opportunities including ones in supplement and drink business. There are many of those in Japan. But I have greater interest in companies handling higher ticket items, that unfortunately are not very common here in Japan.

I'll appreciate it if you advised me about good top tier MLM companies suitable for people in Japan. Thanks! :D

I read through the entire thread, 9 out of 10 posts had to be edited by moderators simply because of users' ignorance. In case you're wondering, I edited out the guy's real name to Mr. X - he wasn't doing anything wrong, except he could have got more involved in discussions and continued conversations through private mail with a few people if he still was looking for a company.

Another example:

Mr. Y wrote:Hey Guys, Im looking for a new MLM opportunity. I would like you to recommend me the one you think would suit me best. I live in the UK, this is really important because a lot of MLM opportunities are really american, and you have a massive advantage if your american. I want an MLM opportunity that you can be just as succesful from the UK, as you can from America. Secondly, i can only devote around 10-14 hours a week towards this MLM.

Has anyone got any suggestions for good MLM's suited to me?

Thanks guys

Same thing here really, this thread actually got locked because of the inevitable pitch-fest. These topics aren't narrowing down exactly what they're looking for, and I think it's important to understand that before you ask on the forums. Otherwise you will get offers from reps associated with almost every company out there.

Now here's a topic I would post if I was looking for a new company:

Seb Brantigan wrote:Hello everyone, I'm searching for a new MLM opportunity and wanted some advice from the BetterNetworker community. I like the idea of marketing nutritional products, so I looked on the BetterNetworker Companies section to help me out and I've narrowed it down to these 5 companies:

*List of 5 nutritional companies here*

Which of these companies is best for a networker who wants to create a long term monthly residual income? Can anyone recommended any other companies with a direct link to their corporate website (no referral links)?

I would especially like some replies from reps who are or have been in these 5 companies. Thanks in advance.

I believe people should find information on joining MLM companies themselves; if you struggled to like I did before I joined my first company, find some leaders you can ask. There's plenty on BetterNetworker who will be happy to help you.

I think you guys get the idea...this has been a problem in several threads, and we can stop threads turning into 'my company does this and that, so join it' type of discussions.

My main point is that people should narrow down what they want in an MLM company a lot more, to prevent the amateur networkers from sneaking their URL in a topic thinking it's acceptable.

Thanks for reading this far into my structured rant, please discuss and let me know your thoughts on this. Have an awesome day.

It also comes down to the other post about being a sales person.

A good sales person will listen to the customer so they can understand
exactly what the person is looking for, then you can provide the best
solution to that person (Which is not always going to be the your company)

A bad sales person like, Joe salesman, is only going to hear,

"I'm looking for a car to buy"

Which they then respond....

"A car! Have I got one for YOU! Holy smokes this bad boy is top of the
line in horse-a-ma-power, and doo-hickies!"

Blah, Blah Blah, Blah

What about their budget, big car, small car, AWD, Sunroof, 4 door, 2 door,
Hatch back, wagon, leather interior, usage, YOU GET THE IDEA :o

A good sales person finds out this information first then says,

"What you're actually looking for is a company like MonaVie,
they deal in a very good health drink in different varieties
and are very popular. You should check them out, my company
deals in fitness products and that's not what you're looking for" :D

The sooner people realize this, the sooner they will see the success they are looking for

Well said Seb!

The information and ideas shared here in the Better Networker forum provide an amazing amount of value, especially when you don't have to sift through irrelevant posts, and excessive self promotion.

We have some exciting things planned to make the community even better. It is greatly appreciated when we see people with in the community step up as leaders, and "politely" inform new members how to interact within the community.

As Seb suggested...

1. If you feel compelled to ask for advice on selecting a company, do your homework first, and narrow your interest down to a few.

2. You will get the best results by looking up members who are already involved with a company that you are considering. You can gauge their knowledge and leadership by the content they have contributed. Contact them directly with your questions rather than start a pitchfest here in the forum.

The less that we have to focus on forum moderation, the more that we can focus on increasing the value of membership and the site as a whole.

Thanks to all of you who help to maintain the quality of "Your" community.

Your title implies that people are joining you. But I think you mean people trying to get people to join them? No that doesn't work, but telling them may not work either. I think many of them either realize that forum is to share ideas and to help each other, or they stop trying.

Thanks for the tip. I often get sidetracked when someone ask what I do or promote. The response should be what do you want. What drives you most? What are your interests? Helping them to find what they like to do to get them started in the right direction. This would be the main reason they came to this forum to ask the tough questions.

For a good MLM, you need a good personal training and a lot of effort. I agree that forums are a place to exchange opinions.
